An open letter to President Elect Trump

You won the election. Governing a very divided nation will be much harder. Fifty percent of voters did not vote for you. The American public is as polarized as at any time in our nation’s history. You would increase that polarization by ignoring the fifty percent of Americans that voted for another candidate. Alternatively, you could do something to unite Americans.

My suggestions:

Reduce or Eliminate Federal Deficits Annual interest on US Debt exceeds the annual defense budget. Do something without harming people.

Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid These programs are in bad shape financially. There is a wide difference of opinion about how to fund these programs but almost unanimous agreement to save them.

Assault Weapons. A vast majority of American would ban purchases of weapons firing more than one projectile per second and would require stronger background checks before purchasing any gun.

Term Limits Americans have largely lost faith in government. They see Congressional Members who hang on to their jobs through name recognition not current responsiveness to voters. Set a term limit.

Abortion State bans on abortion very widely and associated penalties seem to contradict Hippocratic oaths and logic. A federal standard could be enacted after legislative hearings based on medical science (a minimum number of weeks of pregnancy before a state ban?).

These suggestions could be enacted with bipartisan support. Please listen to any other ideas that are: positive, favored by a vast majority of voters and help unite our country.
