MPL boardroom antics part 3

Regarding the TR article published Jan. 27, 2025, titled, “Director warns of ” Terrifying” legislation affecting MPL” during Friends of the library meeting. Friends of the Library Pres. Hutton “Said they, staff and board of trustees, have faced a lot of unnecessary criticism during the past two years.” The criticism is appropriate because the MPL administration ignored direction from the State Library Trustee Handbook beginning in Nov/Dec 2022. MPL staff/board, refuse to discuss the matter. According to policy and procedure, the trustees are allowed to engage patrons in board meetings outside of comment time. They have not done so in 27 consecutive meetings. While displaying ethical, principled trustee action, board pres. Gaffney stated in this paper that she “hoped that middle ground” could be found. Since “middle ground” is blocked from the agenda, an invitation was extended to the trustees 3 times to remain after meetings to discuss it along with the patrons offer of compromise first proposed in Feb. 2023. The public servants refused to serve the public. When asked if they have been instructed not to engage patrons, no reply. When asked if trustees were furnished a copy of the Trustee Handbook, no reply. Again, disregarding handbook policy in April 2023, realizing that ignoring handbook policy was not discouraging civil patron protest, new policy was written that prohibits any concern shown or stated for 5 years (April 2028) from the first action. The Handbook says not to write punitive or retaliatory policy. The Trustees had no problem allowing a public servant, after proper behavior instruction, to yell at patrons, while requiring strict adherence from everyone else. In addition to “middle ground” being blocked from an agenda, so too was a petition/list with 200 signatures and phone numbers of those wanting the Epoch Times newspaper and the American Rifleman magazine in the library displayed with similar publications at no cost to the library. Friends Pres. Hutton’s request for “push back” from those who support trustee censorship to the “very vocal minority,” who propose ADDING popular, timely and pertinent material to a public library, rings hollow. Could it be any clearer who understands the value of a library? Based on this and more, could it be any clearer that Rosenblum, Gaffney, Lyons, Bennet, Morrison, Lindholm, Beek, and Hall need to be replaced?
