To Mark Rohde
This response is for Mark Rohde. Hello Mark, I know you from days gone by but you may not remember me. I read your articles in the T.R. “More names and titles for God.” Would it be right to classify those Old testament sayings merely as actions taken by God on behalf of his people, and not additional, personal names? In Exodus 3:13-15 God tells Moses that his ministry will be to God’s people-the Jews. He instructs Moses to tell the people that “I am who I am”. By His own authority, He names Himself. God only has one name and it is forever the same. He was in the beginning with creation and will be in the end when He closes out human history. By His own power He exists and offers us the opportunity to live evermore. He wants to save us from our mistakes. It is called salvation but we have to ask for it. God is so unlike humans, who have a limited lifespan. It is humans who change His description. Many cultures use their own identity for the Almighty. I know that those people who study scripture in a comparative manner, it is tedious and time consuming. I guess I was expecting you to come out with some personal experiences that would bring hope to those who are seeking His truth. I have not been a fan of using Old Testament descriptions to describe God in New Testament times. I believe your statements leave room for confusion. I guess I was expecting this new writer (Mark Rohde) to have some positive things to say about God. The creator has always been waiting for His people to find Him. I compliment you on wanting to bring scripture to us. Please bring us some hopeful ideas. I know you can do it. Many folks still use those Old Testament sayings but it causes me to drop out of any meaningful ideas that Preachers may be saying. In fact, I had to lay your articles aside for a while, because of the long list of “names for God.” I was waiting for that “wow moment” where I could say, yeah Mark, give us some hopeful vision here. How has he changed you? Can you offer us more insight?
