Our community deserves answers

By Maggie Valentine 1 min read

To the Editor,

The clash between residents and data center developers has become a prevalent issue across the country as of late, and Marshalltown is no exception. Just a short time ago, many people in our community were more likely to ask what a data center is than to offer an opinion.

But in just a few short weeks, that has shifted. Now, the majority are reading about, posting and talking about how data centers will affect our community. I have heard many concerns including:

What will happen to our water supply? Who will pay for utility infrastructure? We don't want our bills to go up! How much pollution will it create? Iowa already has rising cancer rates, we don't want another source of pollution affecting our health! How close could it be to residential areas? What are data centers actually for? And the big one: Why is this being done as quickly and secretly as possible? I wish I knew the answers. And I certainly think that our community deserves these answers before our elected leaders or the Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce discuss development any further.
