The Monday, August 10 meeting of the City Council certainly didn’t work out the way that everyone who spoke thought it would or should!!! Or did it? Without fail those in attendance were there to make sure that a moratorium was in place to have a check and balance for or against a data center coming to town. If I follow the voting chaos correctly, and I would be the only one, there’s a moratorium in place but there won’t be any opportunity for checks and balances because there won’t be a 2nd or 3rd reading with public discussion. Thank you Gary for trying and shame on the ones that won’t allow the readings ‘with’ public discussions?
It should have been a slam dunk! Two gentlemen articulated their concerns about potential locations for these beasts. One has just moved his family into an area with 11 other homes that will be forever negatively impacted from a property value and quality of life standpoint if the plans go through. The other gentleman also has property adjacent to the site with, I’m sure, concerns of decreased value and much less desirability! Those two families are an absolute red flag that should keep anyone in Marshalltown from losing quality of life for their family or monetary loss of property value. I apologize if my read on what went on is incorrect but if I’m right families are absolutely going to be negatively impacted financially and/or quality of life wise. And why, those last two readings come with opportunities for public input. In closing, data centers are a hot topic politically right now. Everything from being pulled from federal lands to having laws invoked for penalties when the companies give false info on how their centers impact where they are being built. And they should never receive even $1 in tax abatement. Mark my word, if history predicts the future, there is ‘no’ benefit for us to invest in a Data Center!
