The problem: United States debt

By Michael Bloom 2 min read

According to recent news items the national debt is over $40 Trillion dollars. People seem to ignore this issue because they feel they can do nothing about it. However, almost all families have debt, and they know what they must do if their loans become too large. Answer: They need to decrease spending and try to earn more income.

The latest annual U S Government Financial Position & Condition Report was dated September 30, 2025. The web address is: fiscal.treasury.gov/accounting/us-financial-report/nation-by-numbers. This 180-page report summarizes trillions of dollars of transactions, offsets, etc. The complexity of this report requires us to focus on approximate values not exact numbers. The values above are from the "Executive Summary.”

The Taxpayer numbers are in the exact proportions to the U S Government data. The above chart will compare the finances of a hypothetical Taxpayer with the U S Government finances.

It is easy to change the Taxpayer numbers above to equate to your income level. If your income is about $100,000 simply multiply all taxpayer numbers by two. If your annual income is about $26,000, divide all numbers by two.

When you have changed the Taxpayer values to match your income level, you can imagine the challenges you would face. Your debt is 8 times your annual income, you are spending more than you earn and 20% of your income is needed to pay the interest on your debt. These are the challenges the U.S. Government ignores. Solutions will require all taxpayers to pay more tax and government must decrease total spending. The government will need to make hard choices in the same way all individual taxpayers are forced to make hard choices about debt. Taxpayers are voters.

I believe we must elect leaders who will address our debt problem.
