What Grassley COULD do

I heard Senator Grassley say that Congress can’t do anything but complain about what Trump and Musk are doing. I beg to differ. He COULD still vote against inappropriate nominations for Cabinet posts and heads of agencies that remain to come before the Senate. Sadly, it’s too late to correct what’s already happened. He COULD schedule well-publicized in-person or virtual town halls and hear what we constituents think about the decisions DOGE and Trump are making and find out how we are already being affected. He COULD speak out daily and correct the lies and misinformation coming ...

Separation does not mean elimination

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...” The 1st Amendment was for protecting religion from government control, which can lead to tyranny; it was not intended to protect government from religion. Thomas Jefferson’s “Separation of Church and State” letter was exclusively about keeping the state out of the church’s business and not about keeping the church out of the state’s business. The phrase highlighted the separation of the institutions of church and state, that separation is not intended to apply ...

A sad commentary

It is a sad commentary when a loyal patron has to remind the MPL director & board what their true duty to the Marshall County public is (which is what John Worden’s letter did). It has been two years since I began attending the monthly MPL board meeting in order to support a patron who, up until then, I had not known. Since I have been a biological researcher my entire career, I have been impressed with the fairness & accuracy of The Epoch Times, especially the science research section. Two years ago I met John Worden & the MPL board just for that very reason, to encourage the support ...

Response to “Sour Grape Syndrome”

Before I address the current whirlwind the Trump cult and the Jan. 29 letter Sour Grape Syndrome by Richard Hill I must take issue with the premise in the Feb. 18th article The Value of Local Artists by artist Mr. Josh Cox. He claims no one has experienced what Marshalltown residents have and only Marshalltown artists can paint what is unique to Marshalltown! Well pardon me but that is an extremely narrow vision of artistry! My brother was an artist and his view of art was to make all people feel the painting! Let’s say a Marshalltown artist painted the destruction of the ...

Waste haulers

Last week the TR reported about a City Council meeting that discussed and declined an offer from an Eldora waste hauler to do business in Marshalltown. The general reasoning for refusal seemed to be that the Council “has a study underway.” That in itself is scary. Any time the City gets involved, the taxpayer will foot the bill, and the bill will be higher than the free market would determine. A few years ago, Mayor Beach became concerned about heavy waste trucks damaging City streets. His thought at the time was to divide the City into separate areas, restricting haulers to their ...

Announcing my candidacy

When Joni Earnst had the press conference, where she was in tears that her divorce proceedings became public, was this to offset the scrutiny of said transcripts or did the pressure of the divorce and plight of the weaker sex in her ongoing valiant glass window battle finally have atoll on her, The point is that I’ve asked Justin, her congressional aid in Cedar Rapids to investigate subliminal messages in textbooks, and it appears he is dragging his feet. I admit I’m a iconoclastic, and running on police corruption in Tama got my dogs killed, especially when you see my dog Coco was ...
