Drake guard named player of the week

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Gary Ricks, Jr. has been on a roll as of late, and the Drake senior guard’s prodigious performances haven’t gone unnoticed.

Ricks was named the Missouri Valley Conference men’s basketball player of week last Monday. He averaged 23.5 points per game last week with a season-high 24 points in a 50-47 loss to Loyola last Wednesday. He drilled seven 3-pointers against the Ramblers, the most by any MVC player this season and the fifth-most in the program’s history. Ricks went on to score 23 points in an 84-78 win over Indiana State Saturday.

The senior guard connected on 60 percent (17-of-28) of his shots in the two contests and he drilled 57.1 percent (12-of-21) of his 3-point attempts. Ricks scored 35.9 percent of the Bulldogs’ points last week and accounted for over 50 percent of Drake’s points against Loyola. He corralled a team-high six rebounds and divvied out four assists against the Sycamores.

Ricks and the rest of the Bulldogs play Illinois State at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at the Knapp Center.

Starting at $4.38/week.
