Bobcats 4th in Waukee Invitational

WAUKEE — The Marshalltown boys track and field team got its season started on Thursday with the Waukee Invitational, and the Bobcats walked out with a fourth-place finish with a team score of 78.5 points.

The best placings for MHS came from the relays, as the 4×800-meter team of Bennett O’Hare, Brent Johnson, Tyrell Davis and Conner Beaty took second with a time of 8 minutes, 52.92 seconds, and the sprint medley relay of Braden Bethke, Jonathan Hernandez, Wyatt Himes and Sam Irwin also finished second with a time of 1:42.86.

Marshalltown placed no lower than fourth in all of the relays, with the 4×100 team of Bethke, Ryan Huffman, Noah DeVenney and Hernandez taking third, the 4×200 team of Bethke, Himes, Huffman and Hernandez placing fourth, the 4×400 team of Himes, Gabe Wyant, Johnson and Davis finishing third, the shuttle hurdle relay of Huffman, Tyler Reeder, Dylan Eygabroad and Giorgio Diiorio taking third and the distance medley relay of Diiorio, DeVenney, Brian Trowbridge and Luke Pedersen also taking third.

O’Hare and Reeder both had the best individual finishes for the Bobcats, with O’Hare taking third in the 800 with a time of 2:09.08 and Reeder placing third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.92 seconds.

Other top finishes individually for MHS include Diiorio taking fourth in the 110 hurdles, right behind Reeder with a time of 16.92 seconds, Lucas Duff taking fourth in the discus and seventh in the shot put, Huffman placing fifth in the high jump, Eygabroad taking seventh in the 400 hurdles, Wyant finishing eighth in the long jump and Pedersen placing eighth in the 1,600.

The Waukee Gold team won its home meet with a team score of 237, nearly 200 points higher than second-place Des Moines Lincoln, who finished with 93 points.

Marshalltown heads back out on the track on March 31 when it travels down to Des Moines East for the Don Graves Spring Classic.
