Grundy Center boys win at Belle Plaine

BELLE PLAINE — Thursday was the start of the outdoor track and field season for the Grundy Center boys team, and the Spartans came away the victor in their first meet with a team score of 137.

Grundy Center won two events in the invitational with Sawyer Bowen taking first individually in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 10 inches, and the 4×400-meter relay team of Bowen, Adam Kaufman, Jensen Clapp and Caleb Kuiper finishing first with a time of 3 minutes, 42.22 seconds.

Where the Spartans really did damage was in the runner-up position, as they took second place in six events. Caleb Kuiper finished second in the 400, Drew Rathe took second in the 400 hurdles and Cade Rohler placed second in the discus. In the relays, the team of Matt Jansen, Austin Knaack, Kaufman and Will Grames took second in the 4×200, the team of Jansen, Knaack, Kaufman and Kuiper scored silver in the sprint medley, and the quartet of Knaack, Grames, Bowen and Rathe was runner-up in the distance medley.

Meskwaki also competed in Belle Plaine in the Class B division, where they finished seventh overall with a team score of 16.

Taurice Grant accounted for all of the Warriors’ 16 points, finishing second in the long jump with a distance of 18-6, followed by a third-place finish in the 400 and sixth-place finishes in both the 200 and 100.
