Bobcat boys tennis falls short against Dragons, 7-4

JOHNSTON — Despite losing the singles matches 5-1, the Marshalltown boys tennis team still had a chance to pull out a victory against CIML Iowa Conference opponent Johnston on Thursday with a strong showing in the doubles matches.

The Bobcats (4-4, 2-2) did play well in the doubles matches but not well enough, as they won in the second portion 3-2 but fell to the Dragons (4-3, 3-1) 7-4 on the day.

Jack Gruening was the lone win in the singles matches, taking a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ben Kreamer at No. 2 singles. Luke Smith at No. 3 singles had a tight match against Nate Hogan but eventually fell, 6-4, 7-5, and Joe Kennedy took a set against Nathan Waters at No. 6 singles but was beaten in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, (10-5).

Smith and Luke McKibben got things rolling in the doubles matches, playing together at No. 1 doubles and handling Kreamer and Hogan, 6-1, 6-0. There was a bit of a shakeup at the Nos. 3 and 4 doubles teams, but both teams came out on top as well with Kadin Skala and Jacob Eberle beating Markas Costen and Waters at No. 3 doubles 6-3, 6-2, and Kennedy and Reed Fricke winning at No. 4 doubles over Maclain Bremner and Kyle Geerts, 6-4, 2-6, (1-0).
