Tigers take 2 from Spartans

Solid pitching performances power MCC baseball past Southwestern

Glass pitched a career-high 6 1/3 innings for the win as the Tigers swept the Spartans 10-4 and 13-4.

Right-hander Greg Class was only two outs away from his first-career complete game.

Duncan Snider finished it off for him with just two pitches.

Glass pitched a career-high 6 1/3 innings for his first win this season and Snider got a game-ending double play on the second pitch of his relief appearance to secure the first of two wins for the Marshalltown Community College baseball team on Sunday at Shawn Williams Field.

Glass struck out four, hit two batters and scattered nine hits and three earned runs while getting plenty of run support as the Tigers (7-22, 5-9) defeated Southwestern 10-4 in Game 1.

Brodie Paulson helped his own cause in the second game, pitching five strong innings and hitting a home run as MCC finished off the sweep, 13-4.

The Tigers improved to 4-2 against Southwestern (9-26, 2-12) this season. The two teams will close out their Iowa Community College Athletic Conference series on Wednesday back at MCC, and the Tigers will have all the momentum after a pair of prolific pitching performances.

Glass, a Waterloo Columbus graduate, couldn’t coax MCC assistant coach Joe Goodman into leaving him on the mound for the remainder of the seventh inning as Southwestern started to get to him. Pedro Nazario hit a one-out double and scored on a single by Nathan Torres, prompting Snider to emerge from the Tiger bullpen.

Southwestern cleanup hitter Jadriel Pantoja lined the second pitch from Snider right to MCC shortstop Jose Mieses, who fired to Paulson at first for the game-ending double play.

Glass pounded the strike zone all game, throwing 70.1 percent of his 87 pitches for strikes while starting 19 of 30 batters with first-pitch strikes.

Mieses, Jeffry Roland and Marving Serrano each had two of MCC’s 11 hits, including doubles for Mieses and Roldan. Mieses, the leadoff batter, drove in three runs and scored once, while Serrano drove in a run with an infield single.

Paulson also pitched five innings for the victory in game two.

The Tigers scored three times in the second inning and six more times in the fifth to chase Southwestern starting pitcher John Poldberg, the son of Brian Poldberg, the head coach of the Kansas City Royals’ Triple-A affiliate Omaha Storm Chasers.

Marshalltown took full advantage of Southwestern’s generosity in the second game as the first five batters reached base and scored in an eventual 13-4 triumph.

Mieses struck out to start the bottom of the first but reached safely on a dropped third strike. Spartan starting pitcher Daniel Hundley hit the next two batters and walked the following two, getting the quick hook.

After stretching their lead to 6-0 on Paulson’s solo homer to deep right field in the second, MCC piled on with seven runs in the bottom of the third. Hunter Cowan reached on leadoff walk and consecutive singles from Karlos Lilly, Joel Torrealba, Joe Monosmith and Mieses chased reliever Brennan Glaze from the mound.

The Tigers kept tacking on against Trevor Fisher, however, as a two-run double by Cowan provided the final blow on the big inning.

Paulson made it stand up for his first win of the season, as he allowed six hits, one walk and four unearned runs over five innings while striking out eight. Snider again spelled relief for the Tigers, tossing two hitless frames while striking out two.

Paulson went 2-for-3 with a homer and a triple, while Mieses and Monosmith both added two singles. Monosmith drove in three runs in the game and a total of four on the day.

MCC makes the road trip to Mason City on Tuesday for a single nine-inning game against NIACC before wrapping up the season series with Southwestern at home Wednesday.
