MCC’s Robinson is region Defensive Player of Year

AMES — The reigning Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year put on a display with her glove and got recognized for it.

Marshalltown Community College sophomore center fielder Shaena Robinson was named the NJCAA Division I Region XI Defensive Player of the Year as the Tigers’ lone representative on the all-region softball team.

Robinson, a Gardnerville, Nev., native, committed just five errors in 74 chances for an MCC squad that ranked last in the region defensively.

It’s the second all-region first-team honor for Robinson, who led the Tigers in nearly every offensive category. She led Region XI with 16 home runs and a 1.000 slugging percentage, ranked fourth in batting average (.435), sixth in on-base percentage (.492) and seventh in RBIs (41).

Robinson, who last season was a second-team NJCAA All-American, was joined on the all-region squad by a pair of MCC freshman. Outfielder Chasity Jordan and catcher Saydee Terrell took second-team honors after their first season with the Tigers.

Jordan batted .325 with 10 doubles, six home runs, 22 RBIs and a team-leading 38 runs scored, while Terrell tallied a .326 average with four home runs, 23 runs scored and a team-best nine stolen bases.

Indian Hills’ Erin Kuba was named the region’s Player of the Year, Carlyn Stanley earned Pitcher of the Year and Laura North received Coach of the Year for the regional champion Warriors. Kuba batted .435 with 24 doubles, seven home runs and 59 RBIs, while Stanley was 13-2 in the circle with a 2.29 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings pitched.

Iowa Western’s Zoe Hicks was picked for Offensive Player of the Year after hitting .485 with 13 home runs and 71 RBIs to go with 15 pitching wins, 130 strikeouts and a 2.76 ERA.
