Smith steps down from Bobcat boys basketball

The latest chapter of Marshalltown boys basketball is coming to a close as Scott Smith has stepped down from his position as head coach after seven years at the helm for the Bobcats.

In his time with MHS basketball, Smith has seen the program through some tough times but left the team better than when he took over. He finished with a record of 32-124, but in his final season the Bobcats went 8-14, including the first postseason win for the program since his debut in 2011-2012.

Smith said the decision wasn’t an easy one, but ultimately it came down to his family taking the next step with his eldest daughter, Kari, getting married last fall.

While the team’s might not have been as successful as years prior, Smith did oversee some of the best individual performances in Bobcat history during his tenure. Aaron Hauser, who played for Smith from 2012-2016, ranks fifth all time in MHS boys basketball history with 967 points and Luke Appel, who just finished his senior year with the team, ranks third all time with 1,038 points.
