SPORTS SHORTS: Marshalltown girls clipped by Hawks

ANKENY — The Marshalltown girls soccer team traveled to take on Class 3A No. 5 Ankeny on Friday, where the Bobcats lost to the Hawks 10-0.

Alexis Legg scored four goals for Ankeny (10-2) in the win while the Hawks had 53 total shots and 10 corner kicks in the win.

Victoria Johnson did all she could to keep Ankeny off the scoreboard, recording 26 saves in the loss for Marshalltown, while Avygail Smith and Trinity See each had shots on goal for the Bobcats.

MHS starts a busy week on the pitch on Monday with a road meeting with Waukee, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Rebels go 3-0 at Waverly-Shell Rock

WAVERLY — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys soccer team had a busy day of action on Saturday at Waverly-Shell Rock, where it had three games scheduled.

The Rebels went 3-0 on the day, beating CAL in game one, Clear Lake in game two 3-2, and wrapping action against Charles City with a 4-0 win.

Travis Kuester had two goals in the win over the Lions on three shots on goal, while Cullen Eiffler netted one goal. Bryce Schick went the distance in goal for the Rebels (6-3), recording three save and allowing two goals.

Against the Comets, Walker Thede led GC/G-R with two goals and an assist, followed by Eiffler and Kuester who each scored as well. Cullen, Caden Kickbush and Mason Skovgard all had assists in the win as well.

Spartans nearly sweep Bulldogs girls

HAMPTON — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls tennis team nearly earned a sweep victory over Hampton-Dumont on Saturday, taking an 8-1 victory on the road.

The Spartans (7-2) improved their current win streak to seven meets.

Reegan Zinkula at No. 3 singles and Erika Johnson at No. 4 singles had the biggest individual wins, each defeating their opponents 10-1, while Leslie Homeister beat Jadin Beyer at No. 2 singles, 10-6.

In the doubles matches, Amber Laube and Zinkula defeated Triston Rew and Erin Plagge at No. 1 doubles, 10-3, and Homeister and Emily Ehrig took out Bianca Tielke and Beyer at No. 2 doubles, 10-5.

GC/G-R boys sweep Hampton-Dumont

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys tennis team earned a sweep victory over Hampton-Dumont on Saturday, taking a 9-0 decision at home.

With the decision, the Spartans (7-2) improved their current win streak to five meets.

Sage Klar at No. 1 singles handled August Bollhagen in an 8-0 win, while Tjaden Meester, Garret Weldon, Nick Voss and Landon Graham each won their singles matches, 8-1.

In the doubles matches, Klar and Meester won at No. 1 doubles over Bollhagen and Hunter Wilkinson, 8-4, while Weldon and Graham beat Kian Gibson and Josh Kew at No. 2 doubles, 8-2, and Voss and Aaron Havens beat Ray Velasquez and Alex Anderson at No. 3 doubles, 8-1.

Trojan girls fall to Ballard, 6-1

TAMA — The South Tama County/East Marshall girls soccer team lost to Ballard on Saturday, 6-1.

Sadie Smith had the lone goal of the day for the Trojans (3-8), scoring on one of her four shot attempts. Olivia Terrones had the assist.

Athena Schrock and Kacee Hamor split time in goal, with Schrock allowing two goals and recording five save and Hamor letting by four goals while defending nine saves.

Spartans stave off Tigers, 6-3

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls tennis team earned a second win over South Hardin this season on Friday, 6-3.

The Spartans (6-2) went 4-2 in the doubles matches, with Leslie Homeister defeating Meghan VandePol at No. 2 singles, 8-3, Erika Johnson beating Isabelle Sisson at No. 4 singles, 8-5, Emerson Kracht winning over Blaze Harms at No. 5 singles, 8-2, and Hannah Stahl beat Sarah England at No. 6 singles, 8-3.

In the doubles matches, Homeister and Emily Ehrig beat Harms and Haley Teske at No. 2 doubles, 8-2, and Johnson and Kracht defeated Sisson and England at No. 3 doubles, 8-5.

While the Tigers (4-6) lost the meet, they did well in the top spots. Danae Nelson earned a win over Amber Laube at No. 1 singles, 8-0, and at No. 1 doubles Nelson and VandePol beat Laube and Reegan Zinkula, 8-2.
