MHS softball gets no-hit by Dragons

JOHNSTON — There’s no soft landing spot in the CIML Iowa Conference when your softball team is falling on hard times.

The Marshalltown softball squad suffered a pair of shutout losses on Wednesday night at Johnston, as the Class 5A No. 6 Dragons dealt the Bobcats a pair of run rule-shortened defeats.

Johnston’s Emily Flint pitched a perfect game in the opening 10-0, five-inning contest, and Hannah Hughes and Claire Henkenius teamed up for a no-hitter in the Dragons’ 12-0, four-inning victory in the nightcap.

Flint finished her perfect game with six strikeouts, facing the minimum 15 batters in the five-inning opener. The Dragons (20-7, 10-2) staked her to a 5-0 lead after two innings and scored at least once in the remaining three frames.

Avery Mull took the loss in the pitching circle for Marshalltown (2-27, 1-17), allowing five hits and only one earned run but walked eight.

In the nightcap, Marina Rosalez became the only Bobcat baserunner of the night after being hit by a pitch in the top of the first inning. Hughes and Henkenius combined to get nine groundouts and three flyouts as Marshalltown didn’t strike out in the second contest.

McKaylee Dawson was tagged for 12 hits and five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings, walking three in the loss. Johnston’s Alisha Rusch ended the night with a walk-off, RBI double.

Marshalltown goes back out on the road Friday night for a CIML Iowa doubleheader at Mason City. The Mohawks beat the Bobcats 7-6 and 15-5 in their first meeting this season at MHS.
