SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs split at Oskaloosa tourney

OSKALOOSA — The Class 2A No. 13 East Marshall softball team scored a 1-0, eight-inning win against Keokuk to split its pair of games Saturday at the Oskaloosa Tournament.

The Mustangs (16-5) started the day with a 4-3 loss to 3A No. 5 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, coming up just short with a late rally against the Rockets (23-5). EBF went ahead 3-1 with three runs in the fifth and added another in the seventh before East Marshall tallied twice in its last at-bat.

Reagan McIlrath took the loss, allowing six hits and two earned runs on three walks and two strikeouts. Maria Rasmusson led the Mustang bats, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Madison Duncan had two hits, Ellen Hungerford and Madison Farrington both had a double and Melinda Puumala pitched in a single.

In the finale against Keokuk, the Mustangs and Chiefs played seven scoreless innings before East Marshall broke through in the eighth. Using the international tiebreaker rule, Hungerford started the bottom of the eighth on second base, took third on a sacrifice bunt by Hannah Birks and scored when a two-out grounder by Duncan was misplayed.

Rasmusson had the Mustangs’ only hit in the 1-0 win. Losing pitcher Jakala Hall walked two and struck out seven for Keokuk, while Kodie Hoskey struck out 13 and walked four in a four-hit shutout.
