SPORTS SHORTS: Comets close with win at Clarksville

CLARKSVILLE — The BCLUW baseball team finished its regular season with a 21-8 win over Clarksville on Friday night, one day removed from clinching a share of the NICL West Division title on Thursday.

Calob Keller earned the win for the Comets (14-12) by pitching the first four innings, then Koty Kruse finished the final three innings. The two combined to allow four hits while striking out five and walking five.

Jack Garber hit his first home run of the season with a grand slam in the fourth inning, and he finished with five RBIs, a single and a double, just a triple shy of the cycle.

Brad Barkema had a single and a double, Logan Mann had two singles, a double and three RBIs, and Eli Runge had a single, a double and two RBIs.

BCLUW will start the Class 1A District 5 tournament on Tuesday with a game against Nashua-Plainfield in Reinbeck.

West Marshall falls to Wolverines

DIKE — The West Marshall baseball team lost its final game of the regular season on Friday by falling to Dike-New Hartford, 6-5.

The Trojans (19-13) held a 5-2 lead through the first 3 1/2 innings, but the Wolverines (22-10) plated four in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead and eventually the game.

Kinnick Christensen took the loss for West Marshall, allowing four hits and six runs through four innings and striking out three. Only three of Christensen’s runs were earned, however.

Alex Dickey closed out the final two innings, allowing no hits, no runs and striking out four.

The Trojans had ten hits in the loss, with Parker Hulbert, Ryan Reyerson, Cameron Bannister and Ben Kielman each recording two hits. Hulbert had an RBI double and a run scored, as did Reyerson, and Bannister also had a double.

West Marshall will start the Class 2A District 12 tournament on Tuesday with a game against the winner of East Marshall and Des Moines Christian at Pleasantville.

Bobcat freshmen get 1 win in 4 games

The Marshalltown freshman baseball team went 1-3 over its last four games, losing twice to Dowling Catholic on the road, 0-11 in five innings and 2-12 in three, and splitting a doubleheader with Des Moines Hoover, winning 12-1 in five innings and losing 13-7.

Carson Williams picked up the win against the Huskies, pitching the first two innings while allowing two hits and one run and striking out four. Bennett Hageman threw the final three innings, allowing one hit, no runs and striking out four.

Gannon Williams was 3-for-4 in the win with an RBI and two runs scored, while Ethan Wertzberger was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run.

In the 11-0 loss to the Maroons, Gannon Williams took the loss after giving up three hits and eight walks in 2 2/3 innings. Aidan DeVolder was 2-for-2 in the game as well.

Joe Burnes was the losing pitcher in the 12-2 loss to Dowling, allowing 10 hits and 12 runs in 2 1/3 innings. Tyler Dunham was 1-for-2 in the game with two RBIs.

Jacob VanPelt was the losing pitcher in the 13-7 loss to Hoover, allowing five hits and seven runs in two innings pitched. Alex Thompson went 2-for-4 in the game with an RBI and a run, and Dunham finished with two RBIs.
