PREP VOLLEYBALL: Shorthanded Trojans go 2-3 at Nevada

NEVADA — The West Marshall volleyball team endured a shorthanded roster on Saturday to finish 2-3 at the Nevada Tournament.

The Trojans (10-13) lost their outside hitter Catherine Sjoblom to an ankle injury and middle hitter Teresa Disney to a band function. With Mary Wilkey out of action because of a family function, West Marshall forged on and finished 2-2 in pool play.

The day began with a three-set loss to Norwalk (19-21, 21-16, 16-14), but the Trojans bounced back with consecutive wins against Carlisle (21-9, 21-12) and Ballard (21-11, 21-13). West Marshall fell to the host Cubs, 21-18, 21-11, to close out pool play.

In bracketed action, West Marshall lost to Carroll, 25-20, 25-13.

Sjoblom shared team-high honors with 18 kills for the day despite playing only a match and a half. Disney added 10 kills and four blocks in two matches worth of action.

Junior setter Hana Hohnstein accumulated 48 assists, 18 kills, 11 service aces, 31 digs and two blocks to lead the Trojans. Junior defensive specialist Morgan Cripps tallied 22 digs and added three kills and three blocks in limited duties at the net. Sophomore Sarah Pierce stepped in at middle blocker and added 12 kills and a team-high seven blocks, while senior Addi Moore finished the day with 12 kills and six blocks.

West Marshall is back at home Tuesday night, hosting AGWSR in an NICL West Division clash that will also serve as the Trojans’ Senior Night.

STC volleyball reaches tourney finals

TAMA — The South Tama County volleyball team more than doubled its win total on Saturday, reaching the finals of its own tournament before falling to Class 2A No. 13 Hudson.

The Trojans (9-16) went 5-1 on the day, losing only to Hudson (21-5) in a three-set finale, 21-12, 17-21, 15-2. STC made 17 swinging errors in the match yet forced the Pirates into their only three-set contest of the tournament.

South Tama got there by beating Belle Plaine (21-17, 21-15), BGM (21-12, 21-8), East Marshall (21-12, 21-18), Grinnell (21-19, 21-16) and Anamosa (21-12, 19-21, 15-12).

The victory over Grinnell was a rematch of the season-opener STC lost in four sets.

For the tournament, senior outside hitter Madison Rohach led the Trojans with 37 kills to go with 22 digs, four blocks and 44-of-48 serving with four aces. Freshman Gracie Vest stepped into the lineup and posted 25 kills with a .265 hitting efficiency, Jaelin Berger had 22 kills and nine blocks, and Stacey Slaven added 20 kills and nine blocks. Abbie Morgan finished the day with 12 kills and a team-leading 10 blocks.

STC senior setter Katie Campbell came away with 102 assists and was 61-for-63 serving with seven aces, while sophomore libero Ashlynn Ellenbecker made a team-leading 33 digs. Junior Clarissa Rosenberger added 28 digs and was 28-for-31 serving with an ace. Mackenzie Beyer added 28-for-30 serving with one ace.

The Trojans jump back into WaMaC West Division play on Tuesday when they host 4A No. 4 Independence.
