SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat wrestlers wrangled by Waukee

WAUKEE — The Marshalltown wrestling team lost its first road dual of the year to CIML Iowa Conference foe Waukee on Thursday night, 60-16.

The Warriors, ranked No. 5 in Class 3A by The Predicament, boast a team that has five ranked individuals, and that proved to be too much for the Bobcats (1-2, 0-1).

Three Marshalltown wrestlers came away with wins, while Waukee got nine pins in its 11 victories.

Javier Rodriguez continued his strong start to the year with a pin of the Warriors’ Elijah Hofbauer at the three minute, 36 second mark of their match at 106 pounds.

Zach Bitker, ranked No. 9 at 126 for MHS, earned a 15-4 major-decision win over Carter Smith.

Jordan Anderson, ranked No. 8 at heavyweight, had the only other win for the Bobcats with a pin of Connor Arndt at the end of the first round.

Bennett Hageman lost by a decision to Nick Miller, who is ranked No. 8 at 120, while Erick Rodriguez was pinned by No. 3 Cody Anderson at 138 and Gannon Williams was pinned by No. 1 Anthony Zach at 170.

Marshalltown next travels to Iowa City on Saturday to compete in the Iowa City Regina tournament, starting at 9 a.m.

Mustangs split after tiebreaker used

PARKERSBURG — The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team split its triangular on Thursday night, beating host Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center 69-12 and falling to Hudson on a 7th-criteria tiebreaker after tying 35-35.

Noah Bandstra, ranked No. 6 in Class 2A at 195 pounds by The Predicament, came away with two wins on the night, defeating Hudson’s Connor Staker with a pin 50 seconds into their match and pinning A-P/GC’s Trey Morris with a pin 20 seconds into their match.

Samuel Bandstra also earned two wins, defeating the Falcons’ Brier Uhlenhopp with a pin 15 seconds into their match at 145 then taking a 13-2 major decision over the Pirates’ Ethan Vogt.

Cole Nauman got two wins at 152 with a 4-1 decision over Hudson’s Izik Rodriguez and a third-period pin of A-P/GC’s Austin Knaack, Kordell Negrete beat the Falcons’ Isaac Hoogestraat at 120 with a pin 36 seconds into their match then got a forfeit victory against the Pirates, and Dom Ridout won at 106 against A-P/GC’s Jayden Bowles with a second-period pin and at 113 with a pin of the Pirates’ Jack Christianson in the first period.

Storm sweep pair of NICL mat foes

CONRAD — The South Hardin-BCLUW wrestling team won both sides of its home double dual on Thursday, beating AGWSR, 63-15, and defeating Tripoli, 66-15.

Against the Cougars, Neifer Ralston earned a victory at 138 pounds for the Storm by pinning Keaton Penning 55 seconds into their match, Michael Fuller got a first-period pin against Cale Culver at 170, Carter Kolthoff beat Ali Gerbracht in a 6-0 decision at 106 and Coby Willett got a first-period pin against Seth Mazoway at 126.

Lucas Gunderson beat the Panthers’ Ethan Schellhorn at 195 with a pin in the second period, and SH-BCLUW’s other 10 wins came by forfeit.
