Edens leads Bobcat boys swim team to 3rd at CIML Iowa

Bryce Edens

FORT DODGE — The results reflected the regular season, which is all Marshalltown boys’ swimming coach Mike Loupee could ask for from Monday’s CIML Iowa Conference meet.

Bobcat freshman Bryce Edens collected the team’s lone individual to garner a third-place finish and was a part of Marshalltown’s bronze medal-winning 400-yard freestyle relay as MHS placed third at Monday’s make-up meet.

The No. 13 Bobcats, who finished third in the CIML Iowa regular-season standings with a 3-2 dual meet record and were the third-highest conference team in the power rankings, ended up where they were supposed to as they continue to train for the postseason.

Tonight’s scheduled meet at Indianola not withstanding, Marshalltown entered the conference meet with the future on the front burner.

“We swam about 6,000 yards and lifted [weights] this morning so they were a little off,” Loupee said, “but otherwise they did pretty well. We placed right where we did in conference. Everything shook out fairly well. We had some really good swims from our younger guys, and the varsity guys were kind of tired.”

Edens came away with third place in the 500 freestyle in a season-best clocking of 5 minutes, 4 seconds. He also teamed with Nash Perisho, Ryne Downey and Carson Beals to pick up another bronze in the final race of the night. The Bobcats’ 400 free relay contingent combined on a time of 3:24.83 and trailed — much like the regular season and the final meet standings — second-ranked Waukee and No. 5 Valley.

“We still swam 14 lifetime-best times and had 35 season-bests, so that’s a pretty good performance,” Loupee added. “We’re poised for a pretty strong district meet next Saturday.”

Marshalltown got a pair of fourth-place finishes in the meet as the 200 medley relay quartet of Jacob Eberle, Blaine Gunderson, Caleb Summers and Marcus Barker timed in at 1:50.80, while the 200 freestyle relay team of Downey, Barker, Perisho and Beals also garnered fourth in 1:32.97.

Beals grabbed fifth place in both the 200 freestyle (1:52.95) and the 100 freestyle (51.06), while Barker was fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:10.64). Summers scored sixth for his time of 58.57 in the 100 butterfly to round out the Bobcats medalwinning performances.

Marshalltown’s district meet on Feb. 2 will be hosted by Southeast Polk High School in Pleasant Hill, with No. 1 Ankeny, No. 16 Mason City and No. 19 Southeast Polk among others in attendance alongside the Bobcats.
