Cyclones try snap streak vs. Ohio St

TULSA, Okla. — The Iowa State men’s basketball team gets its run in the NCAA Tournament underway tonight with a first-round meeting against Ohio State.

The Cyclones (23-11) enter the game ranked No. 24 in the latest Associated Press poll and as the No. 6 seed in the Midwest Region, while the Buckeyes (19-14) are seeded 11th.

Iowa State is also coming off the heels of a Big 12 Conference championship, where it beat tournament-qualifiers Baylor, Kansas State and Kansas to hoist the trophy. Marial Shayok was named the Big 12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player after averaging 18 points per game during the run, and he was the second-leading scorer in the conference with 18,6 points per game.

Lindell Wigginton also had 14 points per game off the bench in the tournament run, and Michael Jacobson averaged 9.7 points and 9.3 rebounds.

The Cyclones are 0-6 all-time against Ohio State, including 0-3 in neutral-site games. The two teams have met twice in the NCAA Tournament, with the last time being a 78-75 victory for the Buckeyes in 2013.

Ohio State has made the NCAA Tournament 29 times as a program and has a 50-27 record. Sophomore Kaleb Wesson leads the team with 14.4 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game, and he shoots 73 percent at the free-throw line.

The game between the Cyclones and Buckeyes is scheduled for an 8:50 p.m. start and will be televised on TBS.
