SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat Golf Outing set for June 13

The 2019 Marshalltown High School Bobcat Golf Outing has been scheduled for June 13 at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course.

The format will be a four-person best shot tournament. Door prizes and a lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m., and there will be both a morning tee time at 8 a.m. and an afternoon tee time at 12:30 p.m.

Cost for the event starts at $60 per individual, which includes green fees, carts, lunch and prizes.

Proceeds from the event will help the MHS athletic department purchase equipment, uniforms and other necessities for the student athletes throughout the year. To sign up, contact Cindy Braack at the MHS main office at 641-754-1130. Registration ends on June 6.

Local officiating Taekwondo nationals

Marshalltown resident Mike Wickham has been selected as a referee for the National Collegiate Taekwondo Association Championships, held on the University of Texas campus on April 20 and 21.

Last year, Wickham was promoted from Vice Chair to Referee Chair of the National Collegiate Taekwondo Association, meaning he will select the applicants who will work the 45th national championships.

Wickham has been a referee since 1996 and has worked multiple USA Olympic Team trials and other national events.

Iowa’s youth football camp in Johnston

IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa football team will conduct a youth football camp on May 4 at Johnston Middle School, where participants can interact with senior members of the Hawkeye program and head coach Kirk Ferentz.

The camp is for boys and girls entering grades 1-8 as of spring 2019. Session I will be held from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. and session II will run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Campers will be divided into age groups and will participate in football fundamental activities.

There is no cost for the camp and all activities will be conducted on the Johnston Middle School football field. Check-in for session I will begin at 10 a.m. and check-in for session II will be 11 a.m.

Online registration is open, all campers must pre-register for the camp at hawkeyefbcamp.com, due to limited space. Campers may take part in only one of the two sessions so more kids can participate.

UNI’s Foster is Big 12’s Wrestler of Year

IRVING, Texas — University of Northern Iowa wrestler Drew Foster has been named the Big 12 Conference Wrestler of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday.

Foster captured his second Big 12 title at 184 pounds in 2019, and he went on to become the NCAA Champion at the same weight. Foster had 10 wins over top-20 opponents, including four wins against top-10 opponents last season.

He finished his final season with a 28-5 record, putting him at 95-35 for his career with two Big 12 titles and a national title.
