SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall boys win own invite

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall boys track and field team won five events and scored second place in six more, winning its Co-Ed Invite on Thursday night.

The Trojans tallied 132 points to hold off East Marshall, which finished with 115 in second place in the eight-team meet.

West Marshall scored a bulk of its points from relay victories. The foursome of Colby McMorran, Brian Morrison, Jarrin Goecke and Cael Kline came away with first place in the sprint medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 42.49 seconds. McMorran joined with Ben Kielman, Hunter Sly and Seth Diser to win the distance medley in 3:57.93, while it was McMorran, Morrison, Jake Tollefson and Goecke that took the top spot in the 4×200 (1:34.68).

The Trojans closed the meet with a win in the 4×100 as McMorran, Josh Larsen, Peyton Pope and Goecke clocked in at 46.72, while Blake Pinegar, Morrison, Diser and Joe Halverson had the second-place time of 3:46.72 in the 4×400.

Nick Thompson gathered West Marshall’s only individual gold, leading the pack in the 3,200 (1:42.49) while also finishing second in the 1,600 (5:14.58). Tollefson was second in the 100 and 200, as was Pinegar in the 400.

Five different individuals racked up East Marshall’s five gold medals for the night. Austin Elliott won the 400 in 54.49, Cam Hungerford finished ahead of Thompson in the 1,600 (4:59.12), Hunter Velez led the discus competition with a distance of 141 feet, 8 inches, Chase Gratopp cleared 5-6 to win the high jump, and Gage Hulin held off teammate Korbin Seth to win the long jump, leaping 20-3 3/4 and 19-2 1/2 respectively.

Cade Curphy came in second in the 800, Isaac Plaehn picked up silver in the 400 hurdles, and the Mustangs’ 4×800 foursome of Curphy, Holden Lane, Dane Thompson and Hungerford finished second in 8:54.58.

Meskwaki finished eighth with 15 points, highlighted by Tátè Bear’s third-place finish in the discus (113-1). Noah Seymour was fifth in both the 400 hurdles (1:02.85) and the discus (107), while Seymour, Evan Nelson, Bear and Tiernan Wanatee teamed up for fourth place in the 4×100 relay (49.92).

Comets 1st, Trojans 2nd at WMHS

STATE CENTER — The BCLUW girls track and field team had 13 top-two finishes en route to a meet title at the West Marshall Co-Ed Invite on Thursday, holding off the host Trojans by just eight points.

BCLUW racked up 150 points to win ahead of West Marshall’s 142, as the Trojans tallied eight event champions to the Comets’ six.

Katie Thompson shined brightest for BCLUW, winning the 100-meter dash in 13.43 seconds, the 400 in 1:05.57, and finishing third in the 1,500 in 5:38.39. Olivia Hughes won the 200 (28.95), Lizzie Garber won the 100 hurdles (16.73) and Kenna Paxson won the 400 hurdles (1:17) as well. The foursome of Kiersten Kruse, Payton Pekarek, Garber and Hughes also teamed up to win the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:10.27.

The Comets also placed second in the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relays. Fiona Speicher scored silver in the 200, Madison Engle was second in the 400, while Kruse was second in the high jump and third in the long jump.

For West Marshall, Renae Schaper won both throwing events, scoring first in the discus (107 feet, 3 inches) and the shot put (38 6 1/2). Kayla Cripps won the high jump by clearing 5 feet, and Grace Girard emerged atop the 1,500 (5:24.05).

The Trojans also won four relay events: the 4×400 (Adisyn Young, Avery Randall, Avril Sinning, Cripps); the 4×800 (Hannah Jovanovich, Randall, Dresden Eldridge, Lilly Buck); the sprint medley (Payton Halverson, Young, Sinning, Cripps); and the distance medley (Young, Sinning, Cripps, Girard).

Payton Tahahwah led Meskwaki to seventh place as a team with her fourth-place finish in the 100 hurdles. She was also fourth in the high jump and fifth in the 400 hurdles. Shye Johnson took fifth in the 400, and sixth in both the 800 and 1,500 for the Warriors.

GMG boys golfers sink Dunkerton

WATERLOO — The GMG boys golf team won an Iowa Star Conference dual against Dunkerton at Red Carpet Country Club on Thursday, 179-213.

Aaron Fleming took meet medalist honors for the Wolverines by shooting a 6-over-par 42, while Kolton Gill was the meet runner-up with a 44. Ryan Hunt and Kamrin Chizek rounded out the scoring for GMG with a 46 and 47, respectively.

Riley Moulds led the Raiders with a 52.

Raiders defeat Wolverines on the links

WATERLOO — The GMG girls golf team lost an Iowa Star Conference dual against Dunkerton on Thursday at Red Carpet Country Club, 248-272.

Jenna Yilek was the top finisher for the Wolverines with a 65, followed by Maya Goos with a 66, Megan Kohn with a 70 and Lily Harris with a 71.

Kayla Rathe was the meet medalist for the Raiders with a 60, and Jade Roquet also shot a 60 for Dunkerton.

Trojans top Comets in boys golf meet

UNION — The West Marshall boys golf team won a triangular over BCLUW and Baxter at the South Hardin Recreation Area on Thursday with a 170.

Caleb Keigan was the top scorer for the Trojans with his runner-up round of 5-over-par 40. Conley Petermeier and Jake Vawter both shot 42s and Jorgen Sogge and Kaleb Papenberg both had 46s for West Marshall.

BCLUW was second in the triangular with a 187. Lane Stanley earned meet medalist by shooting a 1-under 34. Kade Pekarek was next with a 49, followed by Isaac Kopsa with a 51 and Tristen Gallentine with a 53.

BCLUW brings in first at golf triangular

CONRAD — The BCLUW girls golf team won a triangular against West Marshall and Baxter on Thursday at Oakwood Golf Course with a 193.

Abigail Hand was the meet medalist for the Comets with a 44, and she was followed by Jaelyn Allen’s 48, Bailey Ashton with a 48 and Lili Wilson with a 52.

West Marshall was second with a 210, led by Karisa Blcoker’s runner-up showing with a 46. Whitney Edler shot a 48, followed by Kalyn Polley with a 55 and Jaden Hart with a 61.
