SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall splits at Lynx tourney

WEBSTER CITY — The West Marshall softball team split a pair of games at the Webster City Tournament on Saturday, defeating Iowa Falls-Alden 16-5 while falling 2-1 to the host Lynx.

The Trojans (5-5) erupted for a season-high 16 runs against Iowa Falls-Alden, scoring six times in the top of the seventh inning to put hte game away. Renae Schaper went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, four runs scored and two RBIs to lead the way. Kayla Cripps, Grace de Neui and Lilly Buck each had three hits, including a double for Cripps, while Loran Nicholson went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

Freshman Josie Zahnd got the win for West Marshall, pitching all seven innings in her first appearance of the season. She allowed eight hits and four earned runs, striking out eight while walking none, and also had two hits of her own.

The Trojan bats had trouble against Webster City, settling for just three hits in a 2-1 loss. Schaper went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, coming across on a Nicholson single in the seventh inning.

Nicholson allowed six hits and one earned run, walking one while striking out four in the loss.

Rebels fall in Colo-NESCO title game

ZEARING — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team advanced to the championship game of the Colo-NESCO Tournament on Saturday before falling to Webster City.

The Rebels (4-5) doubled up on Colo-NESCO, 6-3, in the opening round. William Kiburis pitched four shutout innings as G-R’s starter, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out four. Ethan Gienger got credit for the win, surrendering three runs over the final three innings.

Tyler Tscherter and Keagan Giesking both had two hits to lead Gladbrook-Reinbeck, with Tscherter scoring twice and driving in a run. Cody Gebel plated a pair as well.

Webster City (7-4) jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the Rebels and never looked back in the championship game, winning 11-1 in five innings. Tscherter, Kiburis and Tyson Creswell accounted for the team’s only hits, with Tscherter driving in Logan Giesking with an RBI double in the third inning.

Wolverines rack up 30 runs, one win

MADRID — The GMG baseball team scored 30 runs on Saturday but could only forge a split in their two games at the Madrid Tournament.

The Wolverines (5-6) fell 14-9 to host Madrid in their opener before beating Woodward Academy 21-17 in the consolation game.

Against Madrid, Blaze Krull went 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored to lead GMG. Aaron Fleming had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs, while Kooper Gill was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

Krull closed his day 9-for-9 by going 5-for-5 in the win against Woodward Academy, racking up a double, four RBIs and five runs scored. Kolton Gill went 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and four runs scored, while Kooper Gill finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs.

Zach Duncan got the win, allowing two runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings, striking out five while walking none.

Staker helps Redhawks slam Raiders

DUNKERTON — Skyler Staker went 3-for-3 with a double, a dinger and seven RBIs as the North Tama baseball team battered Dunkerton 20-4 in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference game.

The Redhawks (8-2) claimed their fifth-straight win by rapping out 11 hits combined with 15 walks issued by Dunkerton pitching. Tate Payne went 2-for-3 with an RBI and four runs scored, and Ryan McLean was 2-for-2 with a double, a run and three RBIs.

Izach Henson went all five innings for North Tama, giving up two earned runs on four hits and a walk, striking out five.

STC baseball team bested by Ballard

TAMA — The South Tama County baseball team fell behind and couldn’t catch up to Ballard in a 7-2 non-conference loss to the Bombers on Friday night.

Cam Klostermann, Matt Wiese and Cael Kellogg each had two hits for the Trojans, while Carter Kriegel doubled and drove in Klosterman and Wiese as the Trojans’ only runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Klostermann took the loss on the mound for the Trojans (2-6), allowing six runs on 11 hits and two walks in five frames.

GMG can’t keep up with Janesville

GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG baseball team fought back to within two runs before Janesville pulled away for a 13-4 victory over the Wolverines in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference clash.

GMG scored three times in the fifth to get within 6-4 before the Wildcats scored six runs in the top of the sixth.

Aaron Fleming went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Seth Burgess was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs, and Kooper Gill finished 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Wolverines offensively. Carson Wobeter drove in a run and Brock Baldazo singled and scored.

Blaze Krull took the loss, allowing seven runs — two earned — on five hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings, striking out two.

Bobcats sweep North for first wins

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown softball team scored its first wins of the season on Thursday, sweeping host Des Moines North 14-3 in five innings and 16-1 in three innings.

The Bobcats racked up 11 hits in the opener, scoring five times in the top of the first and seven more in the second. Gabby Himes finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored, Erica Johnson was 2-for-2 with a triple, and Madi Finch was 2-for-2 to highlight offensive. Kyra Feldman added a triple, and Avery Mull had a single in her only at-bat.

Kailee Pollard allowed five-striaght singles to start the bottom of the first but settled in and got the win, striking out four in two innings. Ella Grife struck out six in three innings of hitless relief.

Marshalltown benefitted from 10 walks and five hit batsmen in the nightcap, needing just five hits to accrue 16 runs. Maggie Augustine was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while Taylor Jones had an RBI double.

Ava Augustine got the pitching win, striking out four in 1 1/3 innings in which she surrendered two hits and one run. Khloe Shipley got the final two outs, both on strikeouts.

Trojans rip Norse with 3 round-trippers

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall baseball team hit three home runs in the opening game of a doubleheader sweep of Roland-Story, knocking off the Norsemen 11-5 and 14-9 on Thursday night.

Brayden Evertsen, Gabe Jones and Kaden Davis all homered for the Trojans in the first game. West Marshall jumped out to a 9-0 lead and held off Roland-Story from there. Cameron Bannister was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs, Kinnick Christensen was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, and Jake Tollefson was 2-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs.

Jones’ homer helped his own cause on the mound as he went 6 1/3 innings for the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out eight. Nat Markle got the final two outs.

Both teams scored in six of seven at-bats in the nightcap, a 14-9 win for West Marshall (8-2). Christensen went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, and Josh Larsen was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored to lead the Trojans.

South Tama softball falls in 5 to BGM

TAMA — The South Tama County softball team managed just three singles in a 14-1, five-inning loss to BGM on Thursday night.

Taylor Lekin, Morgan Haughey and Shelby Slaven each had hits for the Trojans (2-10), who trailed 8-0 before getting on the board in the bottom of the third. Leadoff batter Ashlynn Ellenbecker walked and scored STC’s only run.

In the circle, Ellenbecker was tagged for four earned runs on 13 hits but no walks, striking out two.
