Five Bobcat softball players picked for all-conference accolades

T-R FILE PHOTO - Marshalltown junior third baseman Madi Finch readies her throw to first base after fielding a bunt during the Bobcats’ home doubleheader against Urbandale on July 27 in Marshalltown.

Three of the top eight Class 5A softball teams in the state came from the same division of the same conference, leaving little room for the rest of the clubs in the CIML Iowa Conference for postseason accolades.

Still, the Marshalltown softball squad garnered five all-conference honors for the first time in five seasons despite winning just one league game.

Bobcat senior Marina Rosalez, juniors Madi Finch and Erica Johnson, sophomore Emma McWherter and freshman Avery Mull were chosen as all-CIML Iowa Conference honorable mention selections as announced following the completion of the Iowa Girls High School State Softball Tournament.

This marked the fourth honorable mention selection for Finch, the third for Johnson and the second for Rosalez in spite of Marshalltown finishing the season 6-31 overall and 1-19 in the CIML Iowa Conference.

Finch led the Bobcats with a .275 batting average during conference games, sharing team-high honors with 11 hits. Rosalez batted .256 with team-leading totals of six runs scored, four doubles and six RBIs to go with her first career home run during a home doubleheader against Mason City.

Johnson hit .229 and McWherter batted .167 in conference games. Johnson, playing primarily at shortstop, made just two errors in 58 chances for a .966 fielding percentage, while Finch made plays at a .922 clip at third base. McWherter made just five errors behind the plate.

Mull served as one of Marshalltown’s primary pitching options throughout the season, going 1-10 from the circle in conference play. She tossed a team-leading 53 1/3 innings in league action.

Class 5A state champion Valley and runner-up Waukee accounted for seven of the 13 first-team all-conference selections, while state qualifier Fort Dodge had a league-leading five first-team picks. Southeast Polk, a regional finalist, accounted for the other first-team spot.

The same four teams filled the 13-player second team as well, as neither Marshalltown nor Mason City garnered anything other than honorable mention selections.
