Davis, Canaday named first-team all-state

Marshalltown High School senior Wade Canaday and West Marshall sophomore Kaden Davis both made a mark on their school’s record books this season, and the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association recognized both of them for it.

Canaday and Davis were named first-team all-state in their respective classes — Canaday at pitcher and Davis as an outfielder — to reward them for their efforts on the diamond this past summer.

Canaday, a first-team pitching selection in Class 4A, graduated with 14 career wins on the mound for Marshalltown — which ranks 14th all-time in Bobcat history. Canaday went 8-2 this summer, posting a 1.54 earned run average with 81 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings pitched.

His career totals of 169 strikeouts and 141 2/3 innings also rank 17th and 20th, respectively, in Marshalltown’s program history.

Canaday’s career offensive totals moved him up the record books, too. He heads to Morningside College ranking eighth in career hits (128), sixth in doubles (36) and 14th in runs batted in thanks to a senior season in which he batted .378 with 13 doubles, four home runs and 31 RBIs.

Davis, meanwhile, made an instant impact in his first season with West Marshall. The sophomore right fielder/first baseman earned first-team all-state in Class 2A after a team-leading .456 this summer with 10 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 45 RBIs. He helped the Trojans set a school record for doubles in a season (78) and matched the single-game record with five hits as West Marshall hammered out a school-record 24 hits in a game against East Marshall.

Davis finished seventh in 2A with his 45 RBIs and 12th with four home runs for a West Marshall squad that led the class with 21 home runs this summer. The Trojans also went 27-6 for the year, racking up the second-best winning percentage on record.

Davis is the first West Marshall player to be honored with first-team all-state selection by the coaches since Jared Riemenschneider scored first-team laurels in 2013.

Canaday is the first Marshalltown representative on the 4A first team since, well, last season, when Nate Vance was picked for first-team utility. Canaday was joined, however, by fellow Bobcat Joseph Harris, a junior who was voted to the all-state second team as a third baseman.

Harris finished second to Canaday on the team with a .358 batting average, highlighted by a team-high 44 hits and 16 doubles — which ranked fifth in 4A. Harris shared team-high honors with Canaday with 31 RBIs and also contributed two home runs.

It’s the first time Marshalltown has had two all-state selections of any sort since Nick Thimesch (first team) and Jarred Carlson (second team) were honored in 2010.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck junior Tyler Tscherter garnered second-team selection as a pitcher in Class 1A after finishing 8-2 on the mound with 106 strikeouts in just 65 1/3 innings. He finished with a 1.61 ERA with losses to West Marshall and eventual 1A state finalist Alburnett.

Tscherter also batted .545 with 39 runs, 11 doubles, four triples, 11 home runs and 48 RBIs to lead the Rebels in all offensive categories. He’s the Rebels’ first all-state selection since Cameron Murphy was also a second-team honoree in 2016.

West Marshall graduate Cameron Bannister was the area’s only representative on the IHSBCA Academic All-State teams, garnering first-team honors.

Johnston senior Peyton Williams was voted as the coaches’ Player of the Year, while Urbandale’s Brook Heinen was the recipient of the Lanny Peterson All-Academic Award. Harlan’s Brett Sears received the Gary and Sandy Nyhus Leadership Award.
