Marshalltown Community College's volleyball team swept Grand View in its home opener against Grand View University's junior varsity.
The Tigers held their home opener after playing their first six games on the road and started the season with a 4-2 record.
"We just came out so excited," sophomore setter Raquel Gonzales said. "The crowd was amazing so how could we not be excited. We just knew this is how we wanted to start our year with a big win and we definitely did that."
The Tigers opened Set 1 with a 16-3 lead and never looked back and closed the set with a 25-10 victory.
Set 2 for the Tigers was the toughest win on the night and proved to be a set of runs and momentum. The Tigers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead but Grand View tied the game 5-5. Again the Tigers looked to pull away with a 14-6 lead, but Grand View cut the deficit to one at 19-18 with a 12-5 run. However, the Tigers held on and won the set with a 6-1 run.
"I think it was just little things," Gonzales said. "We kind of let up and we shouldn't have. Once we fixed those little things and we were able to pull out that second set and just come back strong."
MCC bounced back and open the third set 17-1 and closed out the set and match with a 25-11.
"[Grand View] played a little bit better in the second set," head coach Justin Hoskins said. "At the same time, we mixed up our rotation quite a bit. It was the first time we've seen that rotation all year. We're getting a girl back off an injury so were trying to incorporate her a little bit and that kind of threw us for a loop and messed up. We had a few kinds of mental errors with our rotations that kind of allowed them to stay in the game. At the end of the day, we were able to pull it together there toward the end and taking that second set."
"We just came in with more experience than they did. They are going to end up being a pretty good team. Their varsity group is really solid it's just the fact that this was our seventh match compared to their first so you can kind of tell that."
The Tigers now improve to 5-2 on the year and will play Iowa Central at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
