Tscherter heads trio of honorees

Rebel junior garners first-team laurels; Canaday, Fleming earn spots on second team

DES MOINES — There might have been better pitchers and there could have been better hitters, but there were few baseball players in the state of Iowa who were better in both facets of the game in their respective classes than Gladbrook-Reinbeck junior Tyler Tscherter and Marshalltown senior Wade Canaday.

Tscherter has been named first-team all-state by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association as an infielder in Class 1A and Canaday collected second-team honors in Class 4A while leading their respective teams statistically on both sides of the ball.

And for the first time in more than 20 years, a GMG player has been honored, too. Senior first baseman Aaron Fleming represented the Wolverines on an all-state team for the first time since Ryan Boege was an honorable mention selection in 1998. Fleming was voted to the second team in 1A.

The all-state honor for Tscherter is his second in as many years after the G-R standout scored third-team all-IPSWA honors in 2018. This summer, Tscherter finished third in 1A with a .545 batting average, fourth in on-base percentage (.632) and fifth with 11 home runs. He struck out only three times all season.

On the mound, Tscherter went 8-2 with 106 strikeouts in 65 1/3 innings while posting a 1.61 earned run average, and at shortstop he was simply electric. Tscherter committed just two errors in 102 chances for a .980 fielding percentage and recorded 62 assists — good for seventh in 1A.

He’s the first Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball player to be named first team by the media since Scott Benson was a first-team choice in Class 2A in 2009.

Canaday collects his first all-state honor on his way to play baseball at Morningside College in the fall, becoming the first Bobcat to be named to the media’s second team or higher since Kyle Carnahan earned first-team honors in 4A in 2012.

Canaday did it on the mound and at the plate for MHS this summer, going 8-2 with a 1.54 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings pitched while also hitting 13 doubles, four home runs and driving in 31 runs for the Bobcats. He batted a team-best .378 and fielded the ball at a .899 clip while playing second or third base or pitching.

Fleming finished the season for GMG with a .420 batting average, five doubles and 24 RBIs while scoring 32 runs and successfully stealing 20 bases. He made just two errors in 146 chances for a .986 fielding percentage. On the mound, Fleming led the Wolverines in innings pitched (37) while striking out 36 batters.

Captains of the respective all-state teams were Josh Fitzgerald of Mason City Newman Catholic, in 1A; North Linn’s Jake Hilmer in 2A; in 3A it was Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Garrett Finley; and in 4A Johnston’s Peyton Williams.

Fitzgerald led Newman Catholic to a 38-3 record and the 1A state title in an 11-1, six-inning win over Alburnett. During the season he had 26 doubles, three triples and 15 home runs, driving in 42 runs with a .568 batting average. In 15 mound appearances, he had a 1-0 record with three saves and an ERA of 1.71

Hilmer added 2A captain to his collection of accolades, which also includes Mr. Basketball. He is the first athlete in the state to earn both awards. He and the Lynx, who finished the year at 40-6, fell 6-0 to Van Meter in the title game. He boasts a 15-2 record with one save in 18 pitching appearances. Over 85 2/3 innings he finished with an ERA of 0.75.

Finley propelled Central DeWitt to the best season in program history. The catcher and three-year starter led the Sabers to a 38-win campaign and a state runner-up finish in the 3A tournament. Finley hit safely in 37 games for Central DeWitt, including 21 contests with two hits or more. Headed to play baseball at Central College in Pella this fall, Finley was second in 3A in runs batted in (53), third in batting average (.498) and among the top 10 in doubles (15). Finley, the WaMaC East Division Player of the Year, also was 6-0 on the mound with a 2.01 ERA.

No one hit more home runs in the state of Iowa this season than Johnston’s Peyton Williams, the 4A captain. The first baseman and University of Iowa recruit finished the season with a .480 average, 17 doubles, 16 home runs and 57 RBIs in leading the Dragons to a 36-6 record and a state runner-up finish. A four-year starter, Williams was part of four state tournament teams and 140 victories. He finished his career with 27 home runs and 160 RBIs for the Dragons.
