Hernandez leads MHS swimmers in road loss

INDIANOLA — Klaudia Hernandez won two events and the Marshalltown divers swept their event, but the Bobcat girls swimming and diving team suffered a 126-57 loss to host Indianola in Thursday’s cross-CIML dual meet.

Hannah Taylor led Marshalltown’s 1-2-3 sweep of the diving competition without any opposition from Indianola, but the Indians swept four swimming events to take control of the meet from the opening gun.

Indianola swept the 200-yard freestyle, the 50 freestyle, the 500 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, and the Indians even won the scoring battle in the two events Hernandez captured for the ‘Cats.

Hernandez won the 200 individual medley in a time of 2 minutues, 34.89 seconds — a new season-best — as well as the 100 butterfly in 1:11.14, but Indianola took spots 2-3-4 in those races and outscored Marshalltown anyway.

In addition to Kaisa Stanley’s runner-up finish behind Taylor in the diving competition, Marshalltown got runner-up finishes from both of its freestyle relay teams. The 200 free relay squad of Cori Jorgenson, Hernandez, CeCe Waltermire and Taylor Jones took second in a time of 1:52.19 — another new season-best — and the 400 freestyle relay quartet of Hernandez, Emma Pfantz, Jones and Jorgenson got silver in 4:17.18.

The Bobcat 200 medley relay opened the meet with a third-place finish, as Samantha Propp, Waltermire, Pfantz and Riley Robinson combined to clock a 2:20.08. Kiersten Randall trailed her teammates in diving for the bronze medal, Jorgenson got third in the 100 freestyle and Waltermire was third in the 100 breaststroke.

Next up for Marshalltown is Tuesday’s home meet against Mason City.
