UNI’s Smith tabbed for MVFC defensive honor

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Northern Iowa defensive end Elerson G. Smith was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Smith recorded a career-high of three sacks in the 13-6 win over Idaho State on Saturday.

Along with the junior’s sacks, Smith had a career-high of 3.5 tackles for loss while having a total of nine tackles. Smith also recorded a forced fumble and a knocked down pass.

The Panther defense totaled three interceptions, 10 tackles for loss and five sacks while also holding Idaho State to 203 total yards and 69 rushing yards.

Smith was also chosen as the College Sports Madness MVFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Smith is the third UNI player to be chosen as conference player of the week this season.

The ninth-ranked Panthers will go on the road to play No. 5 Weber State in Ogden, Utah, on Saturday in a 7 p.m. game.
