Davis tops conference as Bobcats fall to fourth

FORT DODGE — If the Marshalltown boys’ golf team hopes to get back to the state tournament for the third year in a row, the Bobcats at least know whose example to follow.

MHS senior Cole Davis shot a 2-under-par round of 69 to claim medalist honors at the CIML Iowa Conference meet on Thursday, leading the Bobcats to a fourth-place finish in the team standings.

Waukee successfully defended its conference title with a 295 team total, followed by Southeast Polk (299), West Des Moines Valley (311) and the Bobcats (315). Mason City (349) and Fort Dodge (355) were a long way from contention on a brisk and breezy day at Fort Dodge Country Club.

Davis added to his accolades with an impressive round that included four birdies, two bogeys and the rest pars. He shot a 2-under 33 on the front nine and closed the round with an even-par finish on the back.

“Cole Davis is striking it well and giving himself a ton of birdie looks,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “He hit 14 greens in regulation, which is a great indicator on just how consistent his game is.

“For him to close out his final regular-season meet as conference champion is a great accomplishment. I know that was one of his goals heading into the season and hopefully he’ll be able to check off a few more as we head into postseason play.”

Bobcat sophomore Grant Greazel also scored a conference medal, making his way to sixth place after a cardback as one of three golfers to shoot a 3-over 74. Greazel also scalded the front nine with a 1-under 34 and grind his way back from a rough start on the back nine to shoot 40.

“I was proud of the way he rebounded with six-straight pars to close it out,” said Johnson.

Colin Schmit claimed 20th place overall with his round of 81, and the Bobcats got rounds of 90 from both Drake Polley and Cael Sandvick to complete the team scoring.

“As a team, we knew we had the capability to come away with the win, but we just lacked the consistency throughout the lineup,” said Johnson. “Now that the postseason is here, we’re looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish to close out the year.”

Marshalltown goes to its district meet on Monday at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion, teeing off alongside 12 other teams at 10 a.m. The state meet is Oct. 11-12 at Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City.

“With five of the top 12 teams in the state in our district at Hunters Ridge, we know it’s not going to be easy to advance,” Johnson said. “That said, our guys have proven that when they come together and play their best they can beat any team in the state. We advanced out of the Hunters Ridge district last year, so it’s a place that our guys are familiar with and have good feelings about.

“If we can play smart on the back nine out there, which has some tough holes, I think we’ll do well.”

The top two teams and top two individuals from non-qualifying teams advance to state from the district tournament.
