SPORTS SHORTS: Berhow leads UNI over Cornell College

CEDAR FALLS — Trae Berhow had 20 points the as Northern Iowa men’s basketball team rolled Cornell College 88-66 on Wednesday at the McLeod Center.

James Betz had 16 points for Northern Iowa, which earned its sixth consecutive victory to open the season. AJ Green added 15 points, and Spencer Haldeman had 11 points for the home team.

Marcus Quirk had 12 points for the Rams, a Division III team. Devin Davis added 11 points and Jordan Magnani had 10 points.

Northern Iowa takes on West Virginia on Tuesday.

Hawkeyes overtake Princeton in OT

IOWA CITY — Princeton scored the first six points of overtime but the Iowa women’s basketball team tallied 10 of the next 12 to overtake the Tigers 77-75 on Wednesday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes (3-1) trailed by as many as 13 points during the second quarter before outscoring Princeton (4-1) 40-30 in the second half and then rallying past the Tigers in overtime.

Princeton led 73-67 with 3:08 left in overtime before Iowa countered with the next eight points to regain a lead it never relinquished. Makenzie Meyer made 3-pointer and a pair of free throws, and Kathleen Doyle’s 3-of-4 free-throw shooting made it 77-74 with 4 seconds left.

Doyle led Iowa with 21 points and nine assists, Meyer finished with five 3-pointers and 19 points, Monika Czinano added 10 points and Ollinger tallied eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa’s Subbert up for Mannelly Award

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa long snapper Jackson Subbert has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the Patrick Mannelly Award.

The Patrick Mannelly award is presented to the best overall long snapper in Division I football.

Subbert, a senior, has played in 19 straight games and has been the long snapper for all of placekicker Keith Duncan’s 23 field goals and 21 point-after kicks.

Finalsts for the award will be announced Nov. 25 and the winner of the award will be named on Dec. 14.
