SPORTS SHORTS: Spartans sink No. 13 Trojans in OT

GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center sophomore Bailey Reding sank a 3-pointer as time expired to lift the Spartans to a 56-54 victory over Class 3A No. 13 West Marshall in Friday’s NICL West Division showdown.

Reding finished with a career-high 21 points in leading Grundy Center (5-1, 4-0) to victory. Paiton Wallis added her career high of 13 points for the Spartans, who won their fifth-straight.

West Marshall (5-1, 3-1) fought back from behind to tie the score at 50-all at the end of regulation on freshman Katy Reyerson’s free throw with .5 seconds left. The Trojans snagged a slim lead in overtime before Reding hit the game-winning shot at the horn.

Avril Sinning led West Marshall with 17 points and six steals, while Reyerson finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Teresa Disney added eight points and seven boards, Renae Schaper scored eight points, and Karlyn Snider added seven points and five assists.

Comets down Mustangs with defense

LE GRAND — The BCLUW girls’ basketball team held East Marshall scoreless in the second quarter as the Comets ousted the Mustangs 54-21 in Friday’s NICL West Division contest.

BCLUW (6-3, 2-2) led 20-10 after the first quarter before outscoring the Mustangs 10-0 in the second.

“We did a great job of playing team defense tonight,” said BCLUW head coach David Lee. “We did a great job not only on Olivia [Terrones] but on the people she passed it to.”

Terrones, who scored a school-record 41 points in last Saturday’s game at BGM, was held to six points while leading the Mustangs with seven rebounds, six steals and four assists. Clare Veren finished with six points and Rachael McAnulty added five for East Marshall (4-5, 1-3).

BCLUW was led by 13 points apiece from Allison Engle and Payton Pekarek. Engle added six rebounds, three steals and three assists, while Pekarek hit three 3-pointers. Betula Messerly added eight points and seven rebounds, and Chloe Walters finished with seven points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Madison Ubben tallied six points, seven boards and four steals, and Lizzie Garber chipped in five points.

Tripoli topples GMG girls in Iowa Star

GARWIN — The GMG girls’ basketball team was unable to take a winning streak into the holiday break after falling 58-38 to Tripoli in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference cross-divisional game.

GMG (2-6) was within single digits until Tripoli (4-4) outscored the Wolverines 18-8 in the third quarter to break the game open.

Emily Vaughn matched her career high with 15 points to lead GMG, and Lindsey Slifer made four 3-pointers on her way to a career-high 14 points. Jenna Yilek added six points in the loss.

Zoe Semelroth paced Tripoli with 14 points, Taylor Flaig tallied 12 and Peyton Franzen added nine as the Panthers snapped a three-game skid.

West Marshall boys stopped by Sparty

GRUNDY CENTER — Three players scored in double figures as Grundy Center’s depth and balance was too much for the West Marshall boys’ basketball team to overcome in Friday’s NICL West Division clash.

Dexter Whitehill led the host Spartans (3-2, 2-2) with 14 points, Wes Willis added 12 points and Brayden Sawyer finished with 10 points.

Caleb Keigan led West Marshall (2-4, 1-3) with 13 points, and Manny Lazard added nine points and 12 rebounds for the Trojans. Four players — Qwinton Wilder, Brian Morrison, Kinnick Christensen and Brayden Evertsen — chipped in four points apiece.
