MCC swept by Iowa Western

COUNCIL BLUFFS — Iowa Western scored the last two points of regulation and the first seven points of overtime to steal an 86-81 victory from the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team on Wednesday night.

The host Reivers (12-9, 1-1) trailed 67-62 with 30 seconds left before Jalen Dalcourt canned a 3-pointer to make it a two-point game. Eric Amandio answered with a pair of free throws for MCC, but Josiah Strong knocked down another triple for Iowa Western to cut the margin to one, 69-68, with 17.5 seconds remaining.

Marshalltown went back to the free-throw line but Quavon Blackwood made 1-of-2. Iowa Western hustled down to the other end where Mal Pine made a layup and was fouled, but missed the go-ahead free throw with 4.9 seconds still showing.

MCC guard Caleb Jacobs had the ball knocked out of his hands before the Tigers could get up a potential game-winning shot attempt, forcing overtime, and the Reivers kept rallying. Iowa Western scored the first seven points of the extra period and maintained a lead the rest of the way.

Iowa Western had a chance to put the game away at the free-throw line, too, but Dalcourt went 1-for-2 to leave it an 84-81 Reiver lead. The Tigers scurried back up the court with time winding down but Jacobs lost control of the ball and Dalcourt put an exclamation point on the overtime victory with a dunk as time expired.

Caleb Huffman scored a team-leading 24 points for Iowa Western, including four 3-pointers, and Strong added 21 points including five 3-pointers (two in overtime). Dalcourt contributed 16 points off the bench and Kaleb Thornton finished with 14 points.

Amandio scored a career-high 24 points to lead MCC, and Blackwood added 12 points to go with five rebounds and four steals. Jacobs had 10 points and six boards, and Derrick Paige pitched in 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.

The Tigers shot tremendously well for the game, going 28-of-45 from the field (62.2 percent), 9-of-15 from 3-point range (60 percent) and 16-of-19 at the free-throw line (84.2 percent), but couldn’t overcome 22 turnovers.

Marshalltown is back at home on Saturday night, hosting Northeast in a 7 p.m. contest at the Student Activity Center.
