No. 11 Mason City girls sink MHS with 10 treys

MASON CITY — The Marshalltown girls’ basketball team’s fast start faded away as Class 4A No. 11 Mason City made off with a 67-31 victory over the visiting Bobcats in Monday’s CIML Iowa Conference make-up game.

The Mohawks (7-5, 2-2) made 10 3-pointers in the game and overcame Marshalltown’s quick start. The Bobcats (2-10, 0-4) hung around with Mason City for the first three minutes before the Mohawks sped off into the distance.

“We had another strong start to the game, but back-to-back 3s got Mason City going offensively in the first quarter and we couldn’t respond,” said MHS head coach Brian Murphy. “We started composed, but allowed their aggressiveness and outside shooting to affect our effort.

“As has been the case in our last few games, our frustration has led to unproductive second quarters. We knew Mason City would press and hit some 3s, but we still allowed them to dictate the flow of the game.”

Anna Deets made four of Mason City’s 10 treys and finished with a game-high 17 points. Jaeda Whitner added 14 points and Jada Williams chipped in 10.

The Bobcats were led by 10 points from Madi Finch and nine more from Erica Johnson. Lily Roberts had a team-high five steals and Johnson pulled down four rebounds in the team’s fifth-straight defeat.

Marshalltown returns to the Roundhouse for two CIML Iowa contests this week. The Bobcats host 5A No. 2 Southeast Polk tonight and No. 6 Waukee on Friday, making it four games in a row against ranked competition for MHS.

“We know it’s going to be a grind this week so we’ve got to put this game behind us and get ready for Southeast Polk at home,” said Murphy.
