Panther wrestling puts Utah Valley to the mat

CEDAR FALLS — The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team defeated Utah Valley 32-12 in the Panthers’ Big 12 Conference opener on Saturday at the West Gym.

Jacob Schwarm (125) opened the match with a pin at the 1 minute, 46 second mark of the first period for the Panthers.

At 157, Paden Moore earned his first dual win of the season by major decision, while Austin Yant (165) picked up a 2-0 decision.

Bryce Steiert (174) had three four-point near-falls to secure an 18-0 technical fall. Taylor Lujan (184) had 10 takedowns in a 25-9 win to round out UNI’s match wins.

Utah Valley’s Taylor Lamont defeated Jack Skudlarczyk in a 4-2 decision. The Wolverines also picked up a pair of wins at 197 and 285. UNI’s Noah Glaser was pinned at 197 and Carter Isley lost in an 8-2 decision at heavyweight. UVU forfeited at 149.

The Panthers improved to 1-2 in dual meets and start Big 12 action at 1-0.

UNI will host South Dakota State at 7 p.m. on Friday.
