PREP WRESTLING: EM/GMG gets pair of NICL mat wins

WATERLOO — The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team went 2-0 at an NICL triangular on Thursday night, while South Hardin-BCLUW was edged out by host Waterloo Columbus in the finale.

The EM/GMG Mustangs (12-2, 7-1) scored a 43-27 victory over the Sailors before beating SH-BCLUW by nearly the same score, 42-27.

Only two Mustangs got two match victories on the night as EM/GMG received four forfeits from Waterloo Columbus.

Conner Murty, ranked No. 9 in Class 2A by The Predicament, pinned both of his 195-pound opponents in the first period. He decked Connor Knudtson of Columbus in 1 minute, 22 seconds, and SH-BCLUW’s Lucas Gunderson in 58 seconds.

Isrreal Vargas won both of his heavyweight bouts by first-period pins as well, decking Caleb Vesely of Columbus in 1:43 and Nicolas Paxton of SH-BCLUW in 1:34.

Columbus won eight of the nine contested matches with SH-BCLUW and got a 39-34 team victory in spite of the Sailors’ five forfeits.

The Storm were led by Michael Fuller, who went 2-0 at 170 pounds with a 7-5 decision over EM/GMG’s Logan Walton and a 10-2 major decision over the Sailors’ Alex Buser.

Trojans split at A-P/GC

PARKERSBURG — The West Marshall wrestling team went 1-1 in NICL action here Thursday, beating host Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center (48-34) but falling to Dike-New Hartford (43-33).

The Trojans were led by three wrestlers who won both of their matches. Grant Nason (152 pounds) and Ben Kielman (170) both had two pins, while Austin Pfantz (160) had a pin and a decision.

Solon tracks down STC

SOLON — The South Tama County wrestling team enjoyed a 24-9 lead before host Solon won the last seven matches for a 44-24 victory over the Trojans in Thursday’s WaMaC Conference dual.

Payton Vest (195 pounds) gave STC a 6-0 lead with his second-period pin of Jackson Clevenger, and the Trojans got three-straight six-point wins to make it 24-9 at the midpoint of the meet. Brody Chyma (113) pinned Solon’s Cheyenne Mulford in 31 seconds and the Trojans received forfeits at 120 and 126 before the Spartans made their move.

Solon’s final seven victories included four pins and two major decisions.

Redhawks fall at Wapsie

FAIRBANK — The North Tama wrestling team suffered a pair of NICL defeats in Thursday’s trip to Wapsie Valley, falling 53-18 to Sumner-Fredericksburg and 54-16 to the host Warriors.

North Tama’s points all came from three wrestlers — Zane Nelson (132 pounds), Noah Weber (160) and Xander Bradley (285).

Nelson pinned S-F’s Kaden Meyer in 51 seconds and scored a 12-4 major decision over Wapsie Valley’s Cannon Joerger. Weber pinned the Cougars’ Spencer Matt in 1:29 and received a forfeit from the Warriors. Bradley was the recipient of two forfeits.
