SPORTS SHORTS: Tenth-ranked Rebels remain unbeaten

REINBECK — The Class 1A No. 10 Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team maintained its undefeated record on Tuesday after beating South Hardin, 65-51, in NICL West Division play.

The Rebels’ second half performance was the difference after holding a narrow 25-22 halftime lead.

Out of the half, G-R outscored South Hardin (6-3, 5-1) 17-6 in the third quarter and then outscored the Tigers 23-13 in the fourth quarter.

The Rebels (7-0, 5-0) were 16-of-19 from the free-throw line while drawing only eight fouls on the night.

Tyler Tscherter had a team-leading 25 points and eight rebounds for G-R. William Kiburis totaled 19 points on the night.

South Tama boys fall to Independence

TAMA — The South Tama boys’ basketball team was defeated 56-36 to Independence on Tuesday.

The Trojans (0-9) faced a 15-5 deficit at the end of the first quarter. Despite outscoring Independence 8-7 in the second quarter, the Mustangs scored 17 points in back-to-back quarters in the second half.

Independence (3-6) outrebounded South Tama 35-20 and had 23 steals against the Trojans.

Sonny DeMarce led South Tama with 14 points and seven rebounds.

STC girls still winless after trip to Indee

INDEPENDENCE — The South Tama girls’ basketball team lost to Independence 49-36 on Tuesday.

Independence (3-8) opened the game with a 15-4 lead and went into halftime leading 29-13.

The Trojans (0-10) outscored the Mustangs 12-11 in the third quarter and 11-9 in the fourth quarter but ultimately fell short.

Tylese Rosenberger scored a team-leading 20 points for South Tama.

Rebels halt drought vs. South Hardin

REINBECK — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak on Tuesday after defeating South Hardin 42-25.

G-R (2-7, 2-3 NICL West) held a 29-4 lead by halftime and never looked back for the win.

The Rebels outrebounded South Hardin (2-8, 0-6) 45-30 and held the Tigers to 15 percent shooting from the floor.

Belen Ellenberger scored a team-high of 13 points and hauled in six rebounds for Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

Redhawks bring end to 7-game slide

TRAER — The North Tama girls’ basketball team snapped a seven-game losing streak on Tuesday after defeating Don Bosco 53-25.

The Redhawks (2-7) held a 10-8 lead at the end of the first quarter but shut out Don Bosco (0-7) 13-0 in the second quarter to take control of the game.

Despite shooting 29 percent from the field, the Redhawks came away with 19 steals in the win.

Rylee McLean led the team with a double-double of a team-high of 19 points and a team-high of 11 rebounds.

Warrior girls edged out by Janesville

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — The Meskwaki Settlement girls’ basketball team lost Janesville 56-49 on Tuesday.

Payton Tahahwah led the Warriors (7-3) with 28 points while Deandra Navarro scored 10 points.
