SPORTS SHORTS: Terrones tallies 30 in Mustang victory

LE GRAND — Olivia Terrones scored a game-high 30 points and the East Marshall girls’ basketball team beat back South Hardin, 54-50, in Tuesday’s NICL West Division clash.

Terrones tallied 12 points in the fourth quarter alone to help the Mustangs hold on for the win. Ellie Hull finished with 11 points.

Neither team led by more than four points in the back-and-forth battle.

Meghan VanDePol and Emma Spieker both scored 14 points to lead South Hardin.

Savadty’s 21 helps Wolverines end skid

GARWIN — Justin Savadty scored a game-high 21 points thanks to five 3-pointers as the GMG boys’ basketball team beat Valley Lutheran 67-26 in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash.

Avery Bryant contributed 12 points, Kooper Gill added 11 and Cooper Langenbau finished with 10 more as the Wolverines (3-8, 2-4) netted the league win. Adam Cox chipped in seven points as GMG led from wire to wire and ended a five-game losing streak.

Isaac Natvig led Valley Lutheran with seven points and Adric Schmitz added six more.

West Marshall overtakes BCLUW boys

STATE CENTER — Gabe Jones tallied 24 points and nine rebounds to help the West Marshall boys’ basketball team snap a four-game skid with a 52-50 victory over BCLUW in Tuesday’s NICL West Division game.

Jones made six 3-pointers as the Trojans rallied from an early deficit. BCLUW got out to a 15-6 lead after the first quarter and still held a 22-16 advantage at the half. The two teams were tied at 34-all after three quarters.

Qwinton Wilder contributed 12 points, going 5-for-6 from the free-throw line, and Caleb Keigan had nine points and five assists for West Marshall (3-6, 2-4).

Mason Yantis scored 14 points, Treye Teske added 11 points and Eric Knott pitched in nine for the Comets.

Duncan’s career-high 18 carries GMG

GARWIN — Belle Duncan scored a career-high 18 points to help the GMG girls’ basketball team dispatch Valley Lutheran 64-15 in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division contest.

Jenna Yilek finished with 12 points, Jordan Yilek added nine points and Emily Vaughn tallied seven more for the Wolverines. Kaylea Duden contributed six points in the win, snapping GMG’s three-game slide.

Lauren Rindels led Valley Lutheran with five points.

Trojan girls keep Comets at bay, 40-31

STATE CENTER — Avril Sinning made five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 15 points and the West Marshall girls’ basketball team held off BCLUW 40-31 in an NICL West Division showdown Tuesday.

Katy Reyerson added seven points, seven rebounds and five steals, Renae Schaper netted seven points and eight boards, and Teresa Disney contributed six points and six rebounds as West Marshall (7-1, 5-1) took an early lead and kept it.

Allison Engle scored 13 points to go with six rebounds to help lead BCLUW in the league loss. Chloe Walters scored seven points and Lizzie Garber added six more. Betula Messerly led the Comets with eight rebounds.
