Doyle leads Iowan trio on WBCA All-America

ATLANTA — Three Iowa universities had players honored by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s All-America team Thursday afternoon, led by Iowa’s senior guard Kathleen Doyle.

Doyle is the fourth Iowa player in school history named to the WBCA All-America team after Kachine Alexander, Samantha Logic and Megan Gustafson.

Doyle finished sixth in the nation in assists with 189 and seventh in assists per game with 6.3. Doyle averaged 18.1 points per game. This is Doyle’s third All-America nod of the year following third-team honors from The Associated Press and the USBWA.

Drake forward Becca Hittner and Iowa State wing Ashley Joens earned Honorable Mention honors Thursday. Hittner, a senior for the Bulldogs, ended her career with a season where she averaged 18.9 points per game. Hittner scored 2,133 points in her Drake career.

Joens, a sophomore from Iowa City, averaged a double-double for the Cyclones this season, with 20.5 points and 10.9 rebounds per game.

Oregon senior Sabrina Ionescu was awarded the 2020 Wade Trophy, presented annually to the NCAA Division I Player of the Year by the WBCA.

Ionescu, also the 2019 Wade Trophy recipient, became the first player in men’s or women’s college basketball history to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists in her career. She earned her third consecutive Pac-12 Player of the Year honor and was named Player of the Year by the USBWA and ESPN.com, and is a finalist for the Citizen Naismith Trophy and Nancy Lieberman Award, which she has won the last two years.
