SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans blank Tigers, 5-0
ELDORA — West Marshall junior pitcher Loran Nicholson struck out 10 in a six-hit shutout as the Trojans turned away South Hardin 5-0 in Friday’s NICL West Division softball showdown.
Nicholson didn’t walk a batter and scattered six South Hardin (1-5) singles in the complete-game victory, and she also singled and scored in West Marshall’s two-run fourth inning that helped the Trojans (5-3) put some space between themselves and their hosts.
Renae Schaper and Nicholson both singled to start the fourth and eventually scored on a two-out single by Morgan Cripps that resulted in a throwing error.
Clara Dee singled to lead off the fifth, stole second and scored on Kalyn Polley hit up the middle. Polley moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Grace de Neui and scored on a Schaper single to make it a 5-0 margin.
Schaper finished with two of the Trojans’ seven hits, while Polley drove in two of their five runs.
West Marshall hosts East Marshall in a conference game Monday night in State Center.
