SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat softball swept by Des Moines East

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown softball team suffered a doubleheader defeat at Des Moines East on Wednesday, falling 12-0 in three innings and 6-2 in a CIML twinbill.

In the opener, the Bobcats (1-15) managed just three hits against Des Moines East pitcher Neveah Moon. Erica Johnson led off the game with a single, while Emma McWherter and Johnson added back-to-back singles in the top of the third inning.

MHS pitcher Kailee Pollard took the loss, allowing eight hits and nine runs — only two earned — with two walks and a strikeout in two innings. Khloe Shipley surrendered the last three runs to the Scarlets (4-12) in the bottom of the third to reach the run rule.

Moon was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.

In the nightcap, Marshalltown fell behind 5-0 before getting on the scoreboard. Paige Wertzberger had an RBI single to score McWherter in the fifth and McWherter singled home Avery Mull, who had doubled, to tally a run in the sixth.

Six different Bobcats had a hit in the loss, while East got 11 hits off MHS freshman Ava Augustine, who struck out two and walked none over six innings. Madi Inman homered in support of Kamryn Aswegan, who walked five and struck out one for the Scarlets.

Marshalltown hosts Des Moines Roosevelt today.

Trojan baseball team tramples Comets 23-4

BEAMAN — West Marshall scored at least three times in every inning of a 23-4, four-inning rout of the BCLUW baseball team here Wednesday night.

BCLUW pitchers combined to issue 20 total walks in the loss. Leading West Marshall’s 13-hit attack was Gabe Jones, who had a single, a double, a triple and three RBIs. Kinnick Christensen had a single, a double, a triple, five runs scored and four RBIs, and Jeremy Sly had two singles and four RBIs. Asher Nichols contributed a pinch-hit, RBI single in the Trojans’ five-run fourth.

Dru Wilder got the win for West Marshall (8-2), allowing four hits while striking out two over four innings, hitting two batters. Angus Callaway took the loss for the Comets (0-8).

Mason Yantis and Colton Keller both hit a double for BCLUW, while Walker Ashton and Callaway singled.

West Marshall softball takes care of BCLUW

CONRAD — Clara Dee hit a two-run homer and the West Marshall softball team beat BCLUW 11-4 on Wednesday.

The Trojans (6-5) led 3-2 entering the seventh inning before erupting for eight runs. The Comets (4-8) came back with two scores in the home half of the last frame.

Loran Nicholson struck out six and walked one in the win, allowing nine hits. Abby Feldpausch took the loss for BCLUW, surrendering three runs over four innings with three strikeouts and one walk. West Marshall’s big inning came against Kiersten Kruse, who struck out one, walked one and hit two batters in her three innings of work.

Kennedy Williams hit a two-run homer for BCLUW, while Madison Ubben and Allison Engle both had two hits. Engle doubled and drove in a run as well.

Rebels outscore East Marshall baseball 12-7

REINBECK — Keagan Giesking and Tyler Tscherter both homered and the Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team outlasted East Marshall 12-7 on Wednesday night.

The Rebels broke open a 5-all game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Logan Bowie took the loss on the mound for East Marshall, giving up nine runs — three earned — on 11 hits over five innings. He struck out five. Bowie helped his own cause at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Zach Jacobson was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
