SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans take down Grundy Center

GRUNDY CENTER — Renae Schaper and Loran Nicholson had RBI-doubles as the West Marshall softball team beat Grundy Center 5-1 on Monday night.

Nicholson allowed just four singles and one unearned run for the win, walking three and striking out five.

Grace de Neui and Schaper had two hits apiece to lead the Trojans (7-5) on offense. Payton Halverson tripled and scored, and Clara Dee also drove in a run to help defeat the Spartans (5-5).

East Marshall can’t hold off Cyclones

DENVER — The East Marshall baseball team tied the score in the top of the seventh only to see Denver break it with a walk-off single for a 12-11 victory over the Mustangs on Monday night.

East Marshall (3-9) scored 10 times in the third inning to take a 10-1 lead before Denver (5-6) rallied with seven runs in the fourth, eventually taking an 11-10 lead.

The Mustangs sent 16 batters to the plate in the third, scoring 10 times and leaving the bases loaded. Leadoff batter Landon Elliott scored twice in the inning and again as the tying run in the seventh.

Elliott doubled and scored three runs, Hunter Vilez doubled and scored, while Zach Jacobson and Wesley Hamor each had a hit and two RBIs. Eli Curtis singled in a run and scored as well.

Tigers take down Trojan baseball team

GRINNELL — Grinnell scored five times in the bottom of the fifth to finish off the West Marshall baseball team in a 12-2 setback for the Trojans on Monday.

Jeremy Sly surrendered 10 runs — four earned — over four innings for the loss. He struck out two and walked five. Kaden Davis had an RBI double and Ryan Reyerson also doubled for the Trojans (11-3), who host North Polk tonight and Don Bosco on Wednesday.

Kruse, Comets topple Union softball

CONRAD — Kiersten Kruse struck out eight in five innings and also tripled as the BCLUW softball team beat Union Community 5-2 on Monday night.

Kruse allowed only one hit and walked two as the starter but exited the pitcher’s circle in a 1-all tie. Abby Feldpausch pitched two innings and got the win as BCLUW scored four times in the bottom of the sixth. Kruse capped the big inning for the BCLUW bats with a two-run single.

Kruse finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple, a run scored and two RBIs. Callie Swanson also went 2-for-3 with a run-scoring double.

Feldpausch struck out two and allowed only one hit and one unearned run in her two innings of relief.

Mustangs edged by Grinnell softball

GRINNELL — The East Marshall softball team made a pair of costly errors that surrendered the go-ahead run to Grinnell in a 4-3 loss to the host Tigers on Friday.

Back-to-back Mustang errors in the bottom of the sixth inning allowed Grinnell (7-9) to break a 3-all tie.

East Marshall (11-2) was led by Kennedy Wheater with two hits and an RBI. Emma Pfantz, Hannah Birks, Kodie Hoskey and Morgan Neuroth each added a single.

Hoskey was the hard-luck loser, allowing one earned run on five hits and one walk while striking out 10. Former Marshalltown High School pitcher Ella Grife went four innings for Grinnell, allowing three hits and one unearned run, walking two and striking out three.
