West Marshall softball topples Newton

STATE CENTER — Loran Nicholson struck out 11 in a five-hitter as the West Marshall softball team stumped Newton, 8-2, on Monday night.

Renae Schaper had three of West Marshall’s nine hits as the Trojans (8-7) scored in each of the first five innings. Kalyn Polley was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Schaper was 3-for-4 with a run scored, Nicholson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, and Payton Halverson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Nicholson did not walk a batter and allowed only one earned run for the victory.

Newton’s Kya Butler homered with two outs in the seventh before Nicholson got a strikeout to end the game.

West Marshall goes on the road to face Solon in Class 3A Region 5 quarterfinal action Wednesday at 7 p.m.
