Iowa announces plan to welcome spectators to Kinnick Stadium

AP FILE PHOTO - A fan sits in the stands before a Big Ten Conference football game between Iowa and Purdue on Oct. 19, 2019, at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. Iowa announced on Thursday that it will welcome between 10-15,000 fans for games in the fall.

With college football set to start Sept. 5 for the Iowa Hawkeyes in a 10-game schedule, the university on Thursday announced a plan for its five home games scheduled for this fall.

The athletics department announced that 10-15,000 seats would be available on a single-game basis — with no season tickets being made available and tickets set to go on sale at a later date.

Students will have access to a limited number of student section tickets, with the school still finalizing a distribution plan.

The big news is the changes Iowa is implementing to make having fans in the stadium as safe as possible, starting with a mask mandate. Along with masks, the main stands and premium seating will follow social distancing guidelines and tickets will be spread out throughout the stadium. Seats will be available in groups of two or four and location will just be determined by best spots available by section at the time of purchase.

Mobile parking and ticket passes will limit the amount of person-to-person contact and potential exposure to virus spread.

The school said parking lots would still be open four hours before game time, but at 50 percent capacity.

Iowa hosts Maryland on Sept. 5 at Kinnick Stadium.
