Ankeny goes too low for Bobcat boys

Grant Greazel

ANKENY — The Marshalltown boys’ golf team achieved its goal of shooting a better team total in its return trip to Otter Creek Golf Course.

So did Ankeny.

The host Hawks used their home-course advantage to piece together a CIML dual meet victory on Thursday over visiting Marshalltown, as the Bobcat boys’ golf team fell 145-159 across the front nine holes at Otter Creek.

Marshalltown junior Grant Greazel earned runner-up medalist honors for his even-par round of 36, taking the second-place position through a cardback against Ankeny’s Joey Newton. Hunter Johnson held down the top spot for the Hawks, shooting a 2-under 34 to take medalist honors.

The Hawks shot a collective 1 over par — 14 strokes better than they played when Marshalltown trailed only Ankeny at the Ankeny Invite a week ago, 159-160, over the back nine.

The Bobcats improved by one stroke, but still came up short against Ankeny.

“We were glad to shoot a lower team score than we did last week in the invite at Otter Creek,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “It would have been nice to add a fourth score in the 30s, but we just had a few too many errant tee shots that led to some big numbers.”

Behind Greazel’s even-par effort, both Drake Polley and Colin Schmit shot 3-over rounds of 39, but the other three Bobcats — Kevin Strand, Cael Sandvick and Ryan Schmit — each shot 45. All four Ankeny scoring rounds were 38 or better.

“Ankeny, who hasn’t lost yet this year, is definitely a state-title caliber team,” Johnson said. “When your opponent shoots 1-over par as a team, you have to tip your cap and give them creditor for a great collective performance.”

The Hawks rank third in the state in combined adjusted scoring average at 153.96, and they’re scheduled to be one of 12 other teams in attendance today at Marshalltown’s Joe August Invite at Elmwood Country Club. Play begins at 10 a.m.
