Third-ranked Dowling Catholic left little room at the top for the Marshalltown girls’ swimming and diving team, but the Bobcats still scored four event victories in a decisive dual meet loss to the Maroons on Tuesday night at the MHS pool.

Bobcat freshmen Lesli Waltermire and Averie Wittkop accounted for three swimming wins and senior Hannah Taylor took the top spot in the diving competition, but Dowling hoarded much of the remaining room on the podium. The Maroons made off with a 127-59 triumph despite some strong individual performances by the host Bobcats.

Waltermire made her way to the wall in first place in a pair of swimming events, claiming the 200-yard individual medley in a combined time of 2 minutes, 27.92 seconds, as well as the 100 freestyle in 58.04 seconds.

Wittkop took the top spot in the 100 backstroke, winning in 1:08.00, while Taylor won the diving competition with a total of 277.75 points.

Wittkop had a part in Marshalltown’s only two runner-up results as well, scoring silver in the 200 freestyle (2:12.08) while swimming the lead leg for the 200 freestyle relay squad. Wittkop, Waltermire, Klaudia Hernandez and Erin Stanley finished three seconds back of Dowling’s relay team by touching up in 1:52.43.

The Maroons swept the top three positions in the 100 butterfly as well as the 500 freestyle.

Next Tuesday the Bobcats return home to host Fort Dodge in a CIML Iowa Conference dual meet at the MHS pool.
