Cyclones keep Oklahoma State at bay

Ashley Joens

AMES — Iowa State scrambled to the front of the pack and held off the chase group.

The Cyclone women’s basketball team led Oklahoma State by as many as 13 points in the second quarter and kept the Cowgirls at bay the rest of the way, winning 90-80 in Wednesday’s Big 12 Conference contest inside Hilton Coliseum.

Ashley Joens piled up a monstrous double-double of 30 points and 15 rebounds to lead Iowa State (8-4, 4-1), who led 42-33 at halftime and maintained at least a four-point advantage the rest of the way.

Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw contributed 15 points off the bench, Lexi Donarski hit four 3-pointers on her way to 14 points, and Madison Wise added 12 points in the Cyclone win.

Coming off Sunday’s 99-72 win at Texas Tech in which Iowa State made a school-record 19 3-pointers, the Cyclones shot 16-for-33 from distance to turn back Oklahoma State (8-3, 5-1).

In their first conference loss, the Cowgirls were led by Natasha Mack’s double-double of 34 points and 13 rebounds. Lexy Keys was the only other OSU player to score in double figures, finishing with 14.

The Cyclones go on the road Saturday to face No. 6 Baylor in a 7 p.m. game in Waco, Texas.
