Hoover boys withstand MHS, 63-52

DES MOINES — Manny Austin scored 11 of his game-high 31 points in the fourth quarter as Des Moines Hoover finally pulled away from the Marshalltown boys’ basketball team in Saturday’s 63-52 makeup game.

Hoover (3-0) used a 25-14 advantage in the second quarter to overtake the Bobcats for good, holding them at bay behind Austin’s big finish.

Marshalltown (2-7) managed to hang around behind Armonniey Thomas’ 29 points and four 3-pointers for Isaiah Borgos, but Hoover’s seven-point lead entering the final period withstood the Bobcats’ comeback attempts.

The Huskies shot 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to remain unbeaten three games into their late-starting winter season. Austin, Elijah Vos (15) and Chase Henderson (13) combined to score all but four of Des Moines Hoover’s points in the win.

Thomas, in addition to matching his season-high with 29 points, led the Bobcats with five rebounds. Borgos finished with 12 points, and Prince Jallah added six points despite early foul trouble.

Marshalltown is back at home on Tuesday night, hosting Ottumwa in the second game of a girl/boy doubleheader at the Roundhouse.
